AmeriCorps Middle School Literacy Tutor At Literacy First, we believe literacy is a human right. Since 1994, we've partnered with Title I schools to provide one-to-one, evidence-based reading intervention that helps students become confident, lifelong readers. We're launching an exciting new chapter by expanding our tutoring model to support middle school students who need intervention in foundational reading skills. Building on more than 30 years of success, this pilot program adapts proven instructional practices for an older audience. Many middle school students continue to struggle with foundational reading skills that affect success across every subject. This program provides targeted intervention that helps students build the confidence and skills they need to thrive academically. As one of our inaugural Middle School Literacy Tutors, you'll provide individualized literacy intervention while helping shape a new program through collaboration, reflection, and continuous improvement. This is a great opportunity to: Strengthen the community by working with youth to build fundamental skills Help launch and shape an innovative literacy intervention program for middle school students Contribute ideas and feedback that will directly influence how the program grows Collaborate with experienced educators and literacy specialists to improve instructional practices Pursue an optional alternative teaching certification through Region 13 during your second year of service •must have a Bachelor's degree What's Involved? Conduct 30-minute one-on-one tutoring sessions with middle school students, at your assigned campus, using Literacy First methodology and resources Maintain organized and proper documentation of all lesson plans Assess and record students' progress using weekly progress monitoring probes Collect and enter student data on our Information Management System Collaborate with teachers, school support staff, and Literacy First coaches while providing feedback that helps strengthen this pilot program. Adapt instructional supports within Literacy First guidelines to meet the needs of adolescent learners Participate in ongoing reflection and continuous improvement conversations Attend pre-service training and ongoing literacy trainings throughout the year Tutors serve for a 9-month term from September 1, 2026 through May 28, 2027 2 positions are available: 36 hours per week: Monday - Friday from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM 30 hours per week: Monday - Friday from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM Who you are at work: You thrive in a fast-paced, highly organized setting, where structure supports productivity You take responsibility for your work, maintain a professional demeanor, and stay motivated even when faced with challenges You manage your time effectively and prioritize tasks You enjoy solving problems and are energized by trying new approaches within a structured framework You seek feedback , reflect on your practice, and continuously look for ways to improve . Preferred Experience:

Experience working with adolescents through tutoring, teaching, mentoring, youth programs, or coaching Experience supporting students with diverse learning needs and linguistic backgrounds Coursework or experience related to education, literacy, psychology, child development, speech-language pathology, or special education

You'll Be Supported:

As part of this pilot program, you'll receive extensive coaching and support—you won't be expected to figure it out on your own. Middle School Literacy Tutors receive ongoing coaching and work alongside a team of experienced educators. You'll receive regular opportunities to collaborate, ask questions, share observations, and help refine the program throughout the school year.

U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident High school diploma or equivalent Pass a criminal background check Commitment to serve 9 months, September 1, 2026 through May 28, 2027 This includes daily tutoring, program trainings, and 2 weekend/evening service projects AmeriCorps Volunteers can serve 4 terms, we value our returning AmeriCorps Volunteers who serve with the program for multiple years

Additional Considerations:

Tutors may walk to classrooms on their assigned campus in between tutoring sessions or wait for their students in the hallways during passing periods. Tutors will be sitting for most of their work time interacting with students. Tutors must be able to direct a lesson and maintain focus in an environment where other tutoring sessions will be taking place and the noise level may be distracting at times.

Benefits :

Monthly living stipend: $1,733 (30 hours/week position) or $2,404 (36 hour/week position)
