I run SumOf1, a small math tutoring business in Ashburn. My weekday evenings are full and I have families waiting, which is the honest reason this posting exists. What the job is One-hour sessions, one student at a time, on Zoom. You will start with one or two students and it grows as it fills. I book the sessions and handle the parents. You teach, and afterwards you write two lines about what you covered and what the student needs to work on. That is the whole admin. Pay is $18 an hour. What I need you to be good at High school math. Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus are the bulk of it, and Algebra 1 most of all. If a student is stuck on factoring when the leading coefficient is not 1, or cannot see why the inequality sign flips, I want you to have three ways of explaining it rather than one. The LCPS and FCPS sequences. Most of my students are in Loudoun or Fairfax public schools, and it matters that you know roughly what their class is covering this month rather than teaching the topic in isolation. AP Statistics is a real plus. I would rather not hire twice, and it is the course I am thinnest on. If you can teach sampling distributions and inference, and you know how a free response answer earns its points, say so in your application and it moves you up the list. It is not a requirement. AP Calculus AB or BC, SAT and PSAT prep are all useful for the same reason. Availability is most of what I am hiring for Weekday evenings are where I am short. If you can only do weekends, I probably cannot use you right now, and I would rather say that here than after you have written an application. Tell me which evenings you can actually commit to for the school year. Who tends to do well at this Students. I mean that literally. Some of my best tutors are in high school or college right now, and it is not a compromise, it is the reason they are good. If you sat Algebra 2 last year you know how your teacher actually taught it: which method they use for factoring, what the homework looks like, how the test is graded. I have watched a tutor lose a student by teaching a correct method that was not the one the class uses. You will not make that mistake, because you were in that class. You also remember what was confusing, which is most of the job. Somebody who learned this fifteen years ago has forgotten why it was ever hard. So if you are a junior, a senior, or a college student, apply. Tell me what you took and when. Beyond the math, I care that you turn up on time, that you explain yourself clearly out loud, and that a parent finds you easy to trust. You will be talking a family's child through something they find hard, so being understood is most of the job. You need a quiet place to work, reliable internet, and enough comfort with Zoom to share a screen and write on it. How to apply Apply here and tell me two things: which math courses you have taken and how you did, and which weekday evenings you can commit to. That is enough to start a conversation. I am hiring this week and I reply to everyone who answers those two questions.
