A Tutor works with students who need additional help or review. Provides instruction in an academic subject, or reviews a particular class lesson, or assists with preparing for a test. Works with students one-on-one or in a small group, and usually meets with students outside of school.

Flexible Part-Time (After School and/or Weekends) About the Role We are seeking a compassionate, engaging, and experienced High School Science Tutor to work one-on-one with a student entering 9th grade . The student attends a traditional school, has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) , and benefits from patient, structured, and individualized instruction. This position is ideal for a certified teacher, special education professional, or experienced tutor who enjoys making science approachable, interactive, and engaging. The primary goal is to build a strong understanding of key scientific concepts while preparing the student for success in high school science and the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) . Lessons should be hands-on whenever possible, encourage critical thinking, and be tailored to the student's individual learning style. Responsibilities Develop and deliver individualized science tutoring sessions aligned with the student's curriculum Reinforce classroom instruction while preparing the student for Virginia Science SOL assessments Teach scientific concepts using engaging, hands-on, and real-world learning experiences Adapt instruction to support the student's IEP goals, learning pace, and attention needs Build confidence while strengthening scientific reasoning, problem-solving, and study skills Monitor progress and provide regular updates to parents Preview upcoming classroom concepts to help the student stay ahead and reduce academic frustration Curriculum Focus Instruction should support high school science concepts commonly covered in 9th grade, including: Scientific investigation and the scientific method Biology fundamentals, including cells, genetics, ecosystems, and human body systems Earth and environmental science concepts Physical science principles, including matter, energy, forces, and motion Data analysis and interpretation of scientific investigations Laboratory safety and scientific reasoning Critical thinking and problem-solving aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Science, Education, Special Education, or a related field (or currently pursuing) Experience teaching or tutoring middle school or high school science Experience working with students who have IEPs or diverse learning needs strongly preferred Familiarity with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) is highly desirable Ability to explain scientific concepts in engaging and accessible ways Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills Compensation & Schedule Up to $35 per hour , based on experience and qualifications Flexible part-time schedule Opportunity to make a meaningful impact through individualized instruction Potential for continued tutoring throughout the school year based on progress and family needs Apply Today If you're passionate about helping students gain confidence in science, develop critical thinking skills, and succeed in high school coursework, we'd love to hear from you.
