A Tutor works with students who need additional help or review. Provides instruction in an academic subject, or reviews a particular class lesson, or assists with preparing for a test. Works with students one-on-one or in a small group, and usually meets with students outside of school.
We are looking for a warm, patient, and energetic Special Education university student, teacher, paraprofessional, or student/professional in a related field to work one-on-one with a cheerful and creative 12-year-old student with autism in her home in Ashburn, Virginia. This is an educational tutoring and mentoring role , not a babysitting position. Our goal is to find someone who can build a positive relationship with her while helping her strengthen learning habits, communication, confidence, and independence. What Sessions May Include Working through sixth-grade homework, reading passages, educational texts, and other academic activities Helping her gradually build consistency with sitting, starting tasks, staying engaged, and completing activities Breaking larger assignments into smaller, manageable steps Practicing sentence building and helping her express her thoughts more fully in English Using visual examples, modeling, repetition, and encouragement Incorporating creative activities such as drawing, music, games, or hands-on learning She especially enjoys music, piano, singing, visual arts, humor, and creative activities . If you play an instrument, enjoy art, love reading, or have another talent or interest that can make learning more engaging, we would love for you to bring that into sessions. A Flexible and Collaborative Role The weekly curriculum can be planned collaboratively with the family . We can provide educational materials, goals, recommended activities, and content to work through, or the tutor is welcome to help plan activities on a week-to-week basis based on the student's progress and interests. The approach can be adjusted over time as you get to know her and discover what works best. The family will be present in the home and available to support you. We also have a dedicated at-home learning area with educational materials and resources . You will not be expected to figure everything out on your own. We are also happy to work around a university student's class schedule and changing availability. English as a native language is a requirment as the student will need help with improving their english as well.
