In person at school sites throughout Oakland, CA About the Role Digital Dreamers STEAM Academy is seeking an enthusiastic and dependable After-School Culinary Instructor to lead fun, hands-on cooking and culinary enrichment classes for TK and Kindergarten students in Oakland, CA. This role introduces young children to the basics of cooking, nutrition, measuring, mixing, food preparation, kitchen safety, and following simple recipes through engaging, age-appropriate activities. Students will build confidence and independence as they prepare simple foods, explore ingredients, practice foundational culinary skills, and work together in a positive classroom environment. This position is a great fit for culinary professionals, cooking instructors, nutrition students, educators, college students, early childhood professionals, and youth enrichment instructors who enjoy working with young children. Curriculum and lesson materials are provided. What You'll Teach Lessons may include: Measuring and portioning ingredients Mixing, stirring, pouring, and assembling Following simple recipes and sequences Basic kitchen tools and safe use Age-appropriate food preparation skills Healthy ingredients and nutrition Fruits, vegetables, grains, and other foods Tastes, textures, colors, and food exploration Kitchen cleanliness and food safety Teamwork and sharing responsibilities Creativity through cooking and food presentation Basic math and science concepts through cooking Activities are designed to be hands-on, playful, and developmentally appropriate for TK and Kindergarten students. Responsibilities Lead engaging after-school cooking and culinary classes for TK/K students Demonstrate recipes and cooking techniques in simple, age-appropriate steps Guide students through measuring, mixing, assembling, and preparing food Introduce basic culinary skills, nutrition concepts, and kitchen safety Encourage creativity, curiosity, teamwork, and confidence Help students safely use age-appropriate kitchen tools and materials Follow program procedures related to food safety and student allergies Adapt instruction for different learning styles and abilities Create a positive, nurturing, inclusive, and well-managed classroom environment Supervise students throughout cooking and food-preparation activities Prepare ingredients, supplies, and materials before class Maintain a clean, safe, and organized cooking space Assist with organization and cleanup after each session Record attendance and provide brief class updates Communicate supply needs to the program team Communicate professionally with school staff and program coordinators Follow all school-site and program procedures Multi-Site Assignment Digital Dreamers STEAM Academy partners with multiple school sites throughout Oakland. Instructors may be assigned to one or more school locations based on program schedules, enrollment, instructor availability, and staffing needs. Candidates should be comfortable traveling to assigned school sites throughout Oakland when needed. Instructors who are available to support multiple locations may have opportunities to teach additional sessions. Specific site assignments and schedules will be communicated by the program team.Qualifications We encourage applicants who:
Enjoy working with TK, Kindergarten, preschool, or early elementary-age children Have experience or interest in culinary arts, cooking, nutrition, food education, or youth education Are comfortable demonstrating simple recipes and food-preparation techniques Understand basic kitchen and food safety practices Can explain instructions clearly to young children Are patient, encouraging, energetic, and dependable Have strong communication and organizational skills Are comfortable leading and managing groups of young students Can prepare ingredients and materials independently before class Can reliably commit to the after-school schedule Are able to reliably travel to assigned school sites in Oakland Are comfortable accepting assignments at multiple school locations when available Experience working with children through teaching, childcare, camps, after-school programs, cooking programs, enrichment classes, tutoring, mentoring, volunteering, or youth development is strongly preferred. Preferred Backgrounds Candidates with education, training, or experience in any of the following are especially encouraged to apply: Culinary Arts Cooking Instruction Nutrition Food Science Hospitality Early Childhood Education Elementary Education Child Development Education Youth Development Family & Consumer Sciences Health Education After-School Enrichment Camps or Youth Programs Professional chef experience is not required.
