Position Summary:

The Driver Education Instructor is responsible for delivering state-approved driver education to eligible students. This includes teaching classroom curriculum, conducting range instruction in a controlled driving environment, and supervising behind-the-wheel instruction to prepare students for licensure in the state of Utah. The instructor ensures compliance with all Utah State Board of Education (USBE) requirements and safety protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Classroom Instruction Deliver 27 hours of state-mandated classroom instruction aligned with USBE-approved curriculum. Teach core concepts such as traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, driving under the influence, distracted driving, and road safety. Utilize various instructional methods (e.g., lectures, videos, group discussions, guest speakers). Maintain accurate attendance records and logs for each student. Administer required quizzes, assignments, and the state-mandated final exam. Ensure instruction accommodates all learners, including those with special needs, as required by law. Range Instruction Conduct 6 hours of range driving on a closed course designed for skill development. Provide hands-on instruction covering basic vehicle control, turns, parking, backing, and safety checks. Monitor student progress and provide corrective feedback in a controlled, safe environment. Ensure all safety procedures are followed during range use. Conduct pre-trip vehicle inspections prior to each session. Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Provide 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving experience on public roads per state requirements. Teach advanced driving skills including lane changes, merging, freeway driving, night driving, and urban/rural scenarios. Observe and assess student performance while maintaining dual-control of the vehicle. Ensure student drivers meet readiness criteria before advancing to complex environments. Maintain detailed driving logs and submit necessary documentation to the state system.

Other Responsibilities:

Maintain valid Utah Driver Education Endorsement (PE/Health/Driver Education license with appropriate endorsement). Ensure program compliance with Utah Department of Public Safety and USBE regulations. Maintain and inspect instructional vehicles to ensure safety and proper function. Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and requirements. Stay current with updates to traffic laws and driver education pedagogy through professional development. Attend staff meetings and training as required by the district.

Minimum Qualifications:

Valid Utah Teaching License with Driver Education Endorsement (or approved CTE License with Driver Ed certification). Clean driving record and background check. Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills. Ability to work evenings, weekends, or summer schedules as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience teaching high school students. CPR and First Aid Certification.
