Job Description:
The candidate for this position will prepare and deliver high school equivalency instruction to students enrolled in the Individual Student Alternative Education Plan (ISAEP) program and eligible learners in the assigned jail education program. This candidate will be responsible for teaching Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies in preparation for the GED test. The candidate will deliver engaging, individualized instruction through classroom activities, small-group instruction, approved online learning platforms, test-preparation activities, career-readiness experiences, and other appropriate learning opportunities. The candidate will develop weekly lesson plans, assess student performance and progress, maintain required records, meet with administrators, parents, correctional-facility staff, and other authorized stakeholders as needed, and provide additional support to students who require academic assistance in GED subject areas.
Direct Accountability and Reporting:
Works under the supervision of the Site Administrator/Principal or designee, who is responsible for carrying out the daily operations of the program. The teacher will also comply with the operational and security procedures of the assigned correctional facility. An annual evaluation will be based upon the job description, division and personal goals and objectives specific to the position, and the performance of the teacher.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties of the GED/Jail Education Teacher include, but are not limited to, the following:
Adapts GED content and instructional methods to create relevant sequential assignments and lesson plans that guide and challenge students utilizing curriculum and resources designated by Brunswick County Public Schools.
Administers diagnostic assessments, GED Ready™ practice tests, and other required testing in accordance with division and testing protocols.
Communicates with parents, counselors, administrators, correctional-facility personnel, and other authorized stakeholders regarding student progress and academic performance.
Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials aligned with the division's instructional philosophy, GED content standards, ISAEP requirements, and program goals.
Provides differentiated instruction and small-group or individualized support to meet the learning needs of secondary students, adult learners, and student subgroups.
Encourages students to think critically, strengthen reading and writing skills, apply mathematical reasoning, analyze scientific and social studies concepts, and develop effective test-taking strategies.
Establishes and maintains standards of student conduct necessary for a safe, organized, respectful, and productive learning environment.
Assesses academic progress of students and maintains accurate records, including attendance reports, assessment data, progress reports, instructional documentation, and other required records.
Evaluates student progress toward meeting GED Ready™ benchmarks, official GED testing requirements, ISAEP components, and individualized learning objectives.
Prepares eligible students for the four GED subtests: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies.
Assists eligible students with approved GED registration, scheduling, identification, documentation, and testing procedures within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
Provides instruction and support related to career exploration, workplace readiness, career and technical education, work-based learning, Economics and Personal Finance, employment, postsecondary education, and workforce training.
Ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Virginia Regulations Governing Special Education Programs (8VAC20-81), Virginia Department of Education requirements, and local school board policies.
Identifies student needs and collaborates with professional staff members to address academic, behavioral, health, disability-related, and social-emotional concerns.
Implements applicable Individualized Education Programs, Section 504 Plans, approved GED testing accommodations, and other required student supports.
Demonstrates inclusive instructional practices and promotes a respectful learning environment for all students.
Integrates instructional technology, approved online learning platforms, and academic resources to enhance teaching and student learning.
Maintains student accountability and follows all school division and correctional-facility requirements governing attendance, movement, materials, technology, prohibited items, emergency response, and security.
Accounts for instructional equipment and materials and immediately reports safety, security, behavioral, or operational concerns through established procedures.
Maintains confidentiality of student education records, assessment information, and correctional information in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
Participates in faculty committees, professional development activities, required meetings, program evaluation, and school- or division-sponsored activities.
Provide specially designed instruction to incarcerated students with disabilities in accordance with their IEPs.
Deliver instruction using evidence-based instructional practices that address academic, behavioral, functional, and transition needs.
Differentiate instruction to accommodate varying disability categories, learning styles, and educational levels.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services, progress monitoring, and educational records.
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local special education timelines and procedural safeguards.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Site Administrator/Principal, or designee.
EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution in Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Adult Education, or a related field.
Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Provisional, Collegiate Professional, or Postgraduate Professional License with an appropriate teaching endorsement.
Special education personnel with any special education endorsement, except early childhood special education, may provide instructional services to eligible students with disabilities incarcerated in a regional or local jail. Knowledge of GED preparation, adult-learning principles, differentiated instruction, assessment, and data-informed intervention preferred
Must successfully complete all required background checks, screenings, training, and correctional-facility clearance requirements.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of three (3) years of successful, full-time teaching experience preferred.
Experience teaching secondary students, adult learners, alternative education students, or justice-involved learners preferred. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Must possess the ability to maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, sound judgment, and strict compliance with safety and security procedures.
