DESCRIPTION OF THE DISTRICT
: The Brandon School District is a mid-size school district nestled in Northwest Oakland County. The district has approximately 1,000 students in junior kindergarten-5th grade between the two elementary schools, approximately 600 at the middle school level and approximately 850 at the high school. This small, tight knit community has a strong connection to its schools and is passionate about the education of its youth. Brandon High School sends 85-90% of its graduates to college each year, it was ranked in the 82nd percentile of all schools in the State on the top-to-bottom rankings and it was awarded as a Silver Medal Winner by the US News. Harvey-Swanson elementary school is a one-to-one technology school that is ranked in the 83rd percentile in the State.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
: Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education, emphasis on reading preferred Minimum of five years of successful elementary classroom teaching experience preferable with reading instruction Master's Degree in education or related field preferred Experience with a diverse student and parent population preferred Specialized training (e.g. Reading Recovery or a Masters in Reading) preferred K-2 classroom teaching experience preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
: Knowledge of effective core content area instruction and best practices in elementary literacy Knowledge of research-based effective strategies for elementary and sub-group populations Expertise in phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension Patience and empathy for students at varying skill levels and the ability to pivot instructional strategies quickly Knowledge in the use of technology to support instruction Philosophy that all children can succeed and demonstrates a commitment to working with all children Exceptional interpersonal skills to build successful working relationships Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication Ability and desire to work effectively with students, staff and community Ability to build a collaborative relationship with literacy leader/teacher PLC with the intent to grow as a leader
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
: Work with our most at risk students (K-3 prioritized) Provide individualized or small-group instruction focusing on decoding, fluency, and comprehension Administer diagnostic tests to evaluate reading strengths and needs, using data to inform instruction and track progress Implement Tier II interventions and oversee the day to day function of the building Tier II program reporting directly to the building principal Support professional development in literacy essentials/practices Attend regular district-wide literacy team meetings Collaborate with the district Literacy Coach/Leader Support the work of and collaborate with the Reading Interventionist(s) (create overall literacy intervention schedule, use data to determine caseloads, meet with RI regularly, etc.) Support and supervise instructional paraprofessionals or CAs (provide lesson plans, supervise progress monitoring, create schedules, etc.) Assess the reading strengths and needs of students and provide that information to classroom teachers, parents, and specialized staff in order to provide an effective reading program Collaborate with parents to provide resources and strategies for home reading support Support teachers in documenting student progress Understand and adhere to the District's policies Conduct himself/herself in a professional manner, projecting a good public image of the School District in dealing with the community and employee groups Other duties as assigned
