The nature of the work is focused on contributing to the development of innovative and visually appealing materials for various projects. The role blends artistic skills with technical knowledge to design materials that enhance the overall aesthetic and functionality of products, structures, or visual presentations. The designer will collaborate with project teams to understand design requirements, research and select materials based on properties and aesthetic qualities, and utilize design software to create and refine concepts. Responsibilities include developing prototypes, working with color and texture specialists, and integrating materials seamlessly into overall designs while considering form, function, and manufacturing processes. The role requires staying informed about sustainable materials, conducting performance tests, maintaining detailed documentation, and collaborating with suppliers to ensure quality and design standards are met. Adobe Suite Fluency (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) Advanced Knowledge of Footwear Materials Design (Performance & Lifestyle) Advanced Knowledge of Apparel Materials Design (Performance & Lifestyle) Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Office Ability to upkeep material databases across multiple interfaces (e.g., Aurora, Miro, Excel) Highly organized Basic knowledge of brief creation for new material developments Requirements for the role: Contribute to the development of innovative and visually appealing materials for various projects. Blend artistic skills with technical knowledge to design materials that enhance product aesthetic and functionality. Collaborate with project teams to understand design requirements and functional specifications. Research and select materials based on their properties, durability, and aesthetic qualities. Utilize design software and tools to create and refine material concepts. Develop prototypes and samples to test and validate the visual and tactile aspects of materials. Work closely with color scientists and texture specialists to ensure accurate color matching and texture replication. Consider environmental factors and lighting conditions that may impact material appearance. Collaborate with product designers, architects, or engineers to integrate materials seamlessly into the overall design. Stay informed about sustainable and eco-friendly materials and integrate environmentally responsible options into design considerations. Conduct tests to assess the performance, durability, and safety of materials. Implement quality control measures to maintain consistency in material properties. Maintain detailed records of material specifications, design processes, and testing results. Work closely with material suppliers and manufacturers, evaluate samples, and ensure selected materials meet quality and design standards. Stay abreast of design trends and emerging materials in relevant industries.
Education and Experience:
Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 5 years of directly relevant work experience. (Alternative combinations: PhD or Law + 3 yrs; Masters + 4 yrs; Associates degree + 6 yrs; High School + 7 yrs.) Preferred background: Candidates who have worked at both a major athletic brand (e.g., GEL) and a fast-fashion company (e.g., Skims, Revolve, Alo) or in a start-up environment are highly desirable.
