Job Description
Job Title:
CAD Drafter / Steel Detailer (Custom & Miscellaneous Metals)Job Type:
Full-Time or Part-Time (Flexible)Location:
Denver / Front Range, CO About the Role We are a small Denver-based custom metal fabrication shop specializing in ornamental metalwork (stairs, handrails, guardrails, custom features) and light-to-medium structural steel for tenant improvements, remodels, and high-end residential projects. We are looking for a versatile CAD Drafter / Detailer to work alongside our project manager and estimator. This role bridges design and shop execution—turning architectural plans and job-site field measurements into clean, practical submittal drawings and shop fabrication packages. What You'll Be Doing Drafting & Detailing:
Create submittal drawings for client approval and detailed shop drawing packages (assembly views, weld details, cut lists, and material takeoffs) for shop fabrication and field installation. Working with the guys in the shop to make sure they understand the drawings clearly - ensure they have the information needed without have to make any assumptions or do to much "shop math".Field Verification & Layout:
Visit job sites to take precise field measurements and translate complex, real-world site conditions into accurate 3D models.Project Coordination:
Read architectural and structural prints (Division 5 focus), flag discrepancies, submit RFIs, and coordinate details with engineers, general contractors, and homeowners.Estimating & Purchasing Support:
Assist project managers with material takeoffs and coordination of secondary processes (laser/plasma cutting, brake forming, powder coating, galvanizing). Qualifications & Skills 3D CAD Proficiency:
Strong grasp of 3D modeling and layout tools. We primary use SketchUp and Layout; proficiency in SketchUp is a major plus, but candidates with a strong foundation in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar CAD programs who are willing to adapt are welcome to apply.Print Reading & Construction Knowledge:
Demonstrated ability to read commercial blue prints and residential plan sets. Familiarity with standard structural layouts, miscellaneous metal details, and basic AWS weld symbols.Practical Fabrication Understanding:
Working knowledge of metal fabrication and finishing processes (cutting, bending, welding, grinding, CNC plasma, drilling, powder coating, etc) so your drawings reflect how things actually get built and installed.Site Measurement & Clear Communication:
Comfortable visiting active job sites to measure, as well as communicating professionally with shop fabricators, office staff, and clients.General Tech Savvy:
Comfortable with standard office tools (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, cloud file sharing). A general knack for troubleshooting basic office tech issues is always a plus!Job Types:
