Job Description
Job Title:
Mechanical Designer Job Description The Mechanical Designer will support ongoing product refresh and new product development initiatives for a growing outdoor equipment manufacturer. This role focuses heavily on SolidWorks 3D modeling, engineering documentation, detailed drawing creation, and product design updates across an established portfolio of consumer-facing products. You will work in a highly hands-on environment, balancing multiple projects while developing drawings that clearly communicate design intent for manufacturing and inspection. Responsibilities Create and modify 3D CAD models and assemblies using SolidWorks for existing product refresh efforts and new product development projects. Generate detailed 2D manufacturing drawings that incorporate proper GD&T to communicate clear design intent, tolerances, and inspection requirements. Support product refresh projects, including component updates, labeling changes, cosmetic improvements, and documentation revisions across multiple SKUs. Partner closely with engineering teams to develop prototype and production-ready mechanical designs. Maintain accurate and organized engineering documentation within PDM Vault, including drawing releases and product records. Process engineering change orders (ECOs/ECNs) and manage revision updates to ensure controlled and traceable design changes. Support prototype builds and mechanical assembly activities, contributing to assembly-level design work and hands-on product updates. Ensure all manufacturing-ready documentation is complete, accurate, and aligned with production and inspection needs. Collaborate with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment where priorities may shift based on customer and business needs. Contribute as an independent design expert, taking significant ownership of assigned projects and deliverables throughout the product lifecycle. Essential Skills 3-5+ years of mechanical design or CAD design experience in a manufacturing or product development environment. Strong proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling and assembly design. Proven experience creating detailed manufacturing drawings, including dimensioning and tolerancing. Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) for reliable inspection and production. Experience supporting engineering documentation and revision control processes. Familiarity with product development workflows and iterative prototype cycles. Ability to interpret and apply engineering change orders (ECOs/ECNs) in design and documentation. Comfort working on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high accuracy and attention to detail. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience using PDM Vault or similar product data management systems for documentation control. Exposure to ECO/ECN processes and structured change management in an engineering environment. Background in manufacturing industry settings, including interaction with production teams. Experience working with regulated products or in a regulated environment. Hands-on prototyping or mechanical assembly experience, including support of prototype builds. Experience with sheet metal design and assembly-level mechanical design. Interest in outdoor recreation and climbing industries, with motivation to influence visible consumer products. Ability to take ownership of design tasks and contribute independently within a small-to-mid-sized team. Work Environment The work environment is fast-paced and highly collaborative, with priorities that may shift based on customer and business needs. You will work as part of a small-to-mid-sized team where you interact closely with both engineering and manufacturing groups in a hands-on setting. The role is structured as an independent contributor position, offering significant ownership over your projects and exposure to the complete product lifecycle—from concept through prototype, refinement, and production. The environment emphasizes practical engineering, visible impact on consumer products, and a strong connection to outdoor and climbing-related equipment.
