Substation Drafter Job Description The Substation Drafter creates, edits, and maintains detailed CAD drawings that support substation physical design projects. This role applies established CAD standards and procedures, collaborates closely with a multidisciplinary team, and ensures drawings are accurate, well-organized, and compliant with industry practices. The position offers strong growth potential, exposure to modern design tools, and the opportunity to contribute to a dynamic, collaborative drafting and design environment. Responsibilities Create, edit, and modify detailed CAD drawings for substation projects using AutoCAD and/or MicroStation. Apply established CAD standards, practices, and procedures consistently when creating and updating drawings. Collaborate in a team environment with designers, engineers, and other drafters to support substation design deliverables. Coordinate the filing, storage, and retrieval of drawings and related documents to maintain organized project records. Work with a high level of precision and accuracy to produce clear, error-free design drawings. Plot, print, and check drawings for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to project requirements. Use basic mathematical skills and analytical abilities to interpret design information and apply it correctly in drawings. Utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat/Bluebeam to support documentation and project communication. Participate actively in learning new tools and methods to improve drafting quality and efficiency. Take on additional drafting and project support duties as assigned to meet team and project needs. Essential Skills At least 1 year of drafting or CAD experience in substation design or closely related design work. High school diploma or equivalent. Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation for creating and modifying design drawings. Basic mathematical skills and analytical abilities to support accurate drafting and design work. Strong attention to detail with the ability to work accurately and thoroughly on complex drawings. Self-motivated, with the ability to manage tasks and follow through on responsibilities. Ability to work effectively as a team player in a collaborative environment. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Experience using Adobe Acrobat or Bluebeam for viewing, marking up, and managing drawings and documents. Demonstrated willingness to learn and grow in drafting, CAD tools, and substation design. Additional Skills & Qualifications Associate's degree in Drafting and Design, Engineering, or a related field. 3D modeling experience using tools such as Revit, Civil 3D, or Inventor. Experience with Autodesk Inventor and other Autodesk tools. Experience with MicroStation, Revit, Civil 3D, or similar CAD platforms. Substation physical design experience. Experience with SDS (Substation Design Suite). General drafting and CAD experience, including blueprint reading and interpretation. Good knowledge of industry and technology trends specific to substations. Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC). Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code. Ability to adapt to evolving CAD standards and design practices in the power and utility sector. Work Environment This is an in-office position working as part of a drafting and design team of more than 15 professionals located across offices in Lansdale, PA and Lake Mary, FL. The role involves daily use of CAD software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and potentially 3D modeling tools like Revit, Civil 3D, and Inventor, as well as productivity tools including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat or Bluebeam. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lansdale, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $26.00/hr.
