A space technology company is seeking an experienced Spacecraft CAD Designer to provide short-term support for an active proposal effort. This role will focus on hands-on CAD design, including detailed part design, mechanical assemblies, spacecraft layouts, and hardware accommodation. The ideal candidate will have strong SolidWorks skills and a solid understanding of how spacecraft systems interact and trade against one another from a mechanical perspective. Experience supporting commercial space programs, rideshare missions, ESPA-class spacecraft, or other emerging space programs is highly desirable.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Create and modify detailed 3D part models and mechanical assemblies using SolidWorks. Develop spacecraft layouts and support component and hardware accommodation. Evaluate mechanical packaging, interfaces, clearances, and system interactions. Collaborate with engineering team members to translate technical concepts and proposal requirements into CAD designs. Support mechanical trade studies and provide input regarding potential design constraints. Update existing models and incorporate engineering feedback within a compressed schedule. Provide limited design documentation support, including high-level drawings, interface control documents, and presentation materials. Clearly communicate design issues, risks, and recommended changes to the engineering team.
Qualifications:
Approximately 4-8 years of mechanical CAD or design experience preferred. Strong proficiency with SolidWorks, including part design and assembly modeling. Experience with mechanical packaging, system layouts, and hardware accommodation. Ability to work independently and deliver accurate work under tight deadlines. Strong attention to detail and communication skills. Associate or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Drafting, or a related discipline desired. Preferred Qualifications Experience with spacecraft, satellite, aerospace, or space systems design. Understanding of spacecraft systems and their mechanical interactions. Experience developing spacecraft layouts and accommodating flight hardware. Familiarity with commercial rideshare requirements or emerging commercial space launch environments. Experience with ESPA-class spacecraft or similar small-satellite architectures.
