Structural Steel Detailer SDS/2 & AutoCAD | Full-Time / Contract | Shelbyville, IL Ready to turn steel into something that stands? We're looking for an experienced Structural Steel & Custom Steel Project Detailer who knows their way around SDS/2 and AutoCAD and takes pride in getting the details right. If you enjoy transforming engineering concepts into precise, fabrication-ready drawings, solving problems before they reach the shop floor, and working alongside a team that builds real things, we want to hear from you! What You'll Do As a Structural Steel Detailer, you'll play a key role from design through fabrication and erection. You'll work closely with project managers, engineers, fabricators, and contractors to make sure every project is accurate, efficient, and ready to build.
Create Shop & Erection Drawings:
Produce clear, accurate fabrication and erection drawings using SDS/2 and AutoCAD . Build & Detail 3
D Models:
Develop detailed SDS/2 models, including connections, dimensions, members, and project-specific requirements.
Collaborate & Communicate:
Work directly with engineers, project managers, fabricators, and construction teams to keep projects moving.
Review & Verify:
Check drawings against design documents, specifications, codes, and industry standards including AISC and AWS .
Solve Problems:
Identify conflicts and detailing issues early and develop practical solutions that help prevent costly fabrication and erection problems.
Manage Documentation:
Keep drawings, revisions, models, and project records organized and up to date.
Maintain Quality:
Ensure all detailing meets applicable codes, standards, client requirements, and company quality expectations. Make the Software Work for
You:
Leverage SDS/2 for advanced modeling and connection detailing while using AutoCAD for supplemental drafting and documentation. What We're Looking For You're someone who understands that great steel detailing is about more than drawing lines — it's about making the project work. Required 3+ years of structural steel detailing experience , preferably in commercial or industrial projects Strong proficiency with SDS/2 and AutoCAD Solid understanding of structural steel fabrication and erection Knowledge of welding symbols and steel connections Familiarity with
AISC, AWS
, and applicable building standards Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy Strong communication and problem-solving skills Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines Education An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Drafting, Engineering, or a related field is preferred, but equivalent hands-on experience absolutely counts.
