Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The SMT Process Engineer is a hands-on technical role focused on improving and supporting SMT production processes in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Ideal for someone with 3-5 years of experience, this position involves optimizing SMT equipment and processes, analyzing data to reduce defects, supporting new product introductions, and partnering with Manufacturing and Quality teams to improve efficiency and product quality. The role offers opportunities to deepen technical expertise, lead process improvements, and contribute directly to operational success.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES SMT
Process Ownership & Optimization Develop, optimize, and maintain SMT manufacturing processes including stencil printing, solder paste inspection (SPI), pick-and-place, reflow soldering, and automated optical inspection (AOI) Evaluate equipment performance, fine-tune machine parameters, and drive improvements to increase throughput, yield, and reliability Lead defect-reduction initiatives using root cause analysis tools (5 Whys, Fishbone, PDCA, DMAIC) Statistical Process Control & Six Sigma Implement and maintain SPC on critical SMT processes; monitor process capability indices (Cp, Cpk) and take corrective action when values trend out of control Analyze large process datasets to identify trends, correlations, and opportunities for improvement Support or lead Six Sigma projects aimed at process optimization, defect reduction, and manufacturing cost savings Create and maintain process control plans, FMEAs, and control charts Equipment Programming & Support Program, troubleshoot, and optimize SMT equipment (experience with Panasonic and Koh Young preferred, but training will be provided) Maintain accurate machine libraries including component packages, feeder setups, and placement data Support new product introductions (NPI) by generating, reviewing, and validating SMT programs Quality & Compliance Collaborate with Quality Engineering to address nonconformances, process escapes, and customer returns Ensure compliance with IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, and other relevant standards Support audits (internal, customer, and regulatory) by providing documentation and technical insight Cross-Functional Collaboration Work closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Design Engineering, and Supply Chain teams to resolve issues and improve product manufacturability Train production teams on best practices, standard work, and equipment operation as needed Documentation & Continuous Improvement Develop and maintain work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and process specification documents Lead continuous improvement initiatives targeting cycle time reduction, process robustness, and cost efficiency Support introduction and qualification of new materials, equipment, and technologiesSKILLS, ABILITIES, & QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or related field) or equivalent experience 3-5 years of SMT process engineering experience in electronics manufacturing Strong knowledge of SMT assembly processes, including stencil printing, reflow soldering, and automated inspection Proficiency with SPC methodologies, Six Sigma tools, DOE, and data analysis. Solid troubleshooting abilities with a hands-on approach Ability to interpret schematics, assembly drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation Preferred Qualifications Experience with Panasonic SMT platforms (NPM, CM, AM series, etc.) Experience with Koh Young SPI/AOI systems Six Sigma Green Belt certification or equivalent Familiarity with IPC standards Experience with NPI, DFM, and process qualification Skills & Competencies Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving skills Detail-oriented with a passion for process control and continuous improvement Strong communication skills, both written and verbal Team-oriented with the ability to lead cross-functional projects Driven, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment Physical & Work Environment Requirements Ability to stand, sit, or move throughout the production floor for extended periods Manual dexterity for handling small electronic components Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
