Job Description

Position Summary The Senior Process Engineer develops, designs, implements, and optimizes manufacturing processes to improve safety, reliability, throughput, product quality, yield, and cost performance. This is a hands-on role with a strong plant-floor presence. The engineer works directly with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, EHS, Supply Chain, vendors, and site leadership to solve production problems and execute improvements from concept through startup and sustained results. The successful candidate combines strong engineering fundamentals with practical execution, takes ownership of ambiguous problems, and moves work forward without waiting for detailed direction. Cross-functional resources are available, but the role is expected to provide technical leadership and remain accountable for results without direct supervisory responsibility. Key Responsibilities Process Design & Optimization Develop and improve manufacturing processes, operating methods, equipment configurations, and control strategies to improve safety, quality, reliability, capacity, and cost. Translate operating needs into design bases, technical scopes, process requirements, operating limits, and implementation plans. Lead process optimization focused on throughput, yield, raw-material utilization, product quality, labor productivity, cycle time, energy use, waste reduction, and process capability. Design and execute plant trials, define success criteria, analyze results, and convert successful trials into sustainable operating standards. Develop and maintain PFDs, P&IDs, process narratives, heat and material balances, equipment datasheets, operating envelopes, and engineering calculations. Engineering Calculations & Technical Analysis Material balances: Raw-material consumption, yield, losses, recycle, waste, inventory, and batch reconciliation.
Heat and energy balances:
Heating/cooling loads, utilities, heat-transfer duty, and energy use.
Fluid flow and hydraulics:
Flow rate, pressure drop, pipe sizing, pump head, system curves, line velocity, and transfer time. Mixing and batch processes Vessel working volume, batch size, agitation, addition rates, residence time, sequencing, cycle time, and scale-up.
Capacity and performance:
Bottlenecks, demonstrated capacity, utilization, OEE, downtime, reliability, process capability, and variability.
Project economics:
Capital and operating cost, savings, cost avoidance, ROI, payback, sensitivity, and alternatives analysis. Calculations must clearly identify assumptions, inputs, units, methodology, limitations, and conclusions, and must be validated against plant data and field conditions. Project Management & Execution Lead projects from problem definition through scope, design, cost estimate, approval support, procurement, installation, commissioning, startup, handoff, and benefit realization. Develop project charters, schedules, budgets, technical deliverables, resource plans, risks, acceptance criteria, and success metrics appropriate to project size and complexity. Coordinate cross-functional resources, vendors, and contractors; identify and escalate scope, cost, schedule, resource, and technical risks early. Manage multiple priorities while maintaining ownership, pace, documentation quality, and follow-through. Confirm implemented solutions achieve expected safety, quality, reliability, capacity, and financial outcomes and close remaining gaps. Operations Support, Troubleshooting & Quality Deliverables Spend meaningful time on the plant floor observing processes and equipment, gathering data, engaging operators and technicians, and validating actual field conditions. Troubleshoot process, equipment, quality, yield, and production issues with Operations and Maintenance; define immediate containment and permanent corrective actions. Lead structured root-cause investigations and convert lessons learned into improved controls, procedures, training, documentation, and preventive actions. Produce accurate, complete, reviewable, and implementation-ready calculations, drawings, specifications, procedures, and reports. Establish deliverables, review points, acceptance criteria, and approvers at project initiation; keep documentation current through Management of Change and operating handoff. Support process trials, startups, plant upsets, and non-routine callouts as required. Safety & Cross-Functional Leadership Ensure process designs, modifications, trials, and recommendations meet applicable safety, environmental, regulatory, and company requirements. Lead or support Management of Change, process hazard reviews, pre-startup safety reviews, incident investigations, and corrective-action implementation. Influence decisions through sound engineering, data, credibility, and clear communication rather than positional authority. Leverage available cross-functional resources while retaining clear ownership for driving problems to resolution. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Seven to ten years of process engineering experience in chemical, petrochemical, specialty chemical, or industrial manufacturing. Demonstrated experience in process design, manufacturing optimization, plant troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and project execution. Experience moving projects from concept and calculation through field implementation, commissioning, startup, and sustained operation. Strong capability in engineering calculations, data analysis, PFDs, P&IDs, technical documentation, and Microsoft Excel. Strong project-management, communication, prioritization, and cross-functional influence skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience with batch chemical processes, solids handling, mixing, milling, material transfer, or related processing technologies. Experience with process controls, automation, manufacturing data systems, or statistical process control. Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous-improvement training. Capital project justification, equipment selection, vendor coordination, commissioning, and startup experience. Work Conditions On-site role requiring regular presence in production, equipment, utility, and project-installation areas. Requires lifting up to 40 pounds, climbing ladders or stairs, walking, bending, and stooping. Must be able to wear required PPE, including a respirator. Availability to work weekends or holidays and respond to non-routine callouts as needed.
