Steel Structures America, Inc. (SSA) is a family-owned, full-service post-frame and metal building company headquartered in Post Falls, Idaho, in operation since 1995. SSA designs, engineers, permits, and constructs custom steel and post-frame structures — including garages, shops, barns, barndominiums, ministorage facilities, and commercial buildings — for residential, agricultural, and commercial clients across Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. SSA is one of the largest metal building contractors in the Inland Northwest, completing 500+ projects annually. They are growing their land development branch and looking to add a Civil EIT to their team. As part of the land development team, you will research municipal development requirements, design site plans and process client and AHJ feedback. Position Summary SSA is seeking a Civil Engineer in Training to support site development and civil design work tied to its post-frame and metal building projects — including ministorage facilities, commercial sites, and larger residential/commercial developments. This is an early-career engineering role with direct exposure to the full project lifecycle, working alongside licensed PE staff with a defined path toward licensure and increasing project ownership. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare grading, drainage, and stormwater designs for residential, agricultural, and commercial site development projects
- Develop and review civil construction documents: site plans, utility plans, erosion and sediment control plans, and construction details
- Perform engineering calculations (stormwater, earthwork, hydraulics) under PE supervision
- Research and apply local jurisdictional code, zoning, and permitting requirements across multiple state jurisdictions.
- Coordinate with surveyors, contractors, sales staff, and local permitting agencies during design and permitting phases
- Support construction-phase services: RFI responses, submittal review, and periodic site visits
- Assist in tracking permitting status and code research across SSA's multi-state project pipeline Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- EIT/EI certification required or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
- 2-4 years of relevant civil design experience, we are looking for someone who can hit the ground running and start working on the backlog of civil work currently planned.
- Working knowledge of Civil 3D required; AutoCAD proficiency preferred
- Working understanding of site grading, stormwater management, and earthwork principles
- Self-motivated with strong written and verbal communication skills — this role interacts directly with clients, contractors, and permitting agencies
- Willingness to travel occasionally within the five-state service area for site visits (site visits outside a one-hour radius are rare) What We Offer
