A Structural Engineer designs and analyzes engineering and construction projects to ensure they are safe and structurally sound. They often specialize in particular types of structures, such as buildings, bridges, pipelines, industrial, tunnels, vehicles, ships, aircraft, or spacecraft.
The Opportunity Argos Engineers is growing, and we're seeking a part-time contract licensed Structural Engineer to support our expanding industrial and seismic workload. This hybrid Southern California role involves leading industrial and infrastructure projects that improve safety, compliance, and reliability. The ideal candidate brings experience in structural evaluations, seismic analysis, retrofit design, equipment anchorage, and applicable codes such as
CBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 41, ACI
318, and AISC 360, along with structural and mechanical systems (experience with fire water piping design is preferred). You will work with cross-disciplinary teams, support clients through technical challenges, solve complex engineering challenges, and deliver impactful solutions for refineries, food plants, cold storage facilities, utilities, and municipalities. What You'll Do Structural & Seismic Analysis:
Perform structural evaluations, seismic analysis, retrofit design, building assessments and remediation (structural upgrades, roof repairs, egress compliance), and fall protection & seismic bracing designs.
Equipment & Steel Detailing:
Design and review equipment anchorage, equipment evaluations & support (pumps, compressors, blowers, racks, conveyors), and catwalks, platforms, ladders, and steel fabrication design/plan checks.
Pressure Vessel Engineering Design & Detailing:
Create nozzle schedules, support details, manway designs, and wear plate sections. Produce and check general arrangement (GA), fabrication, and welding drawings for new or modified vessels. Develop and review calculation packages covering stress, thickness, reinforcement, nozzle loads, and external pressures, performing peer reviews for accuracy and compliance. Apply ASME Section VIII (Div. 1 & 2) and API 650 standards for vessel design, modifications, and repairs. Perform fitness-for-service assessments (Level 3) on aging or damaged vessels and pipes.
Firewater & Utility Systems:
Conduct firewater flow calculations, assessments, and risk matrix/consequence scenarios. Review drawings of existing fire hydrant piping, city specifications, and utility standards. Prepare and review construction drawing packages (Site Layout Plans, Tie-In Plans, Piping Details, P&IDs, Process Flow Diagrams, Utility Layout Plans). Perform piping evaluations, modifications, and vibration measurements.
Project Execution & Tools:
Manage projects from scoping through delivery: design development, client coordination, construction support, and regulatory compliance. Prepare professional reports, calculations, and drawings using tools such as Auto
CAD, CAESAR
II, MathCAD, WaterCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office. Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders to deliver safe, code-compliant, and cost-effective solutions.
What You'll Bring License:
California Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) License (required).
Experience:
10+ years of engineering experience in structural systems, preferably within industrial or infrastructure projects.
Code Expertise:
Strong familiarity with applicable governing codes and standards including
CBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 41, ACI 318, AISC 360, ASME/API
codes, and industrial safety requirements.
Technical Skills:
Proven experience with structural evaluations, seismic analysis, retrofit design, equipment anchorage, and field inspections, with the ability to integrate structural and mechanical systems.
Software:
Proficiency with engineering software such as Auto
CAD, CAESAR
II, MathCAD, WaterCAD, and Bluebeam.
Communication:
Strong skills in technical writing, reporting, and project coordination.
Flexibility:
Ability to work in a hybrid environment (office, client sites, occasional field work). What Sets You Apart Experience with refinery, food processing, cold storage, or energy infrastructure projects. Deep knowledge of California Building Code (CBC), ASCE 41 seismic evaluation/retrofit standards, and
