Project Engineer Location:
Blacksburg, VA (Virginia Tech Campus)
Salary:
$75,000-$80,000 annually Position Summary We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Project Engineer to support construction operations on projects located at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. This role is ideal for an individual who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about delivering high-quality construction projects safely, on schedule, and within budget. The Project Engineer serves as a key member of the project team by coordinating project documentation, assisting with scheduling and cost control, managing subcontractor communications, and supporting field operations throughout all phases of construction. Key Responsibilities Assist Project Managers and Superintendents with the planning, execution, and closeout of construction projects. Manage project documentation, including RFIs, submittals, change orders, meeting minutes, and document control. Coordinate with architects, engineers, subcontractors, vendors, and owners to ensure timely resolution of project issues. Track project schedules and help monitor milestones to support on-time project completion. Review drawings and specifications for accuracy and constructability. Assist with procurement of materials and equipment and monitor delivery schedules. Support project cost tracking, forecasting, and reporting. Participate in project meetings and maintain accurate records of discussions and action items. Conduct site visits to monitor progress, quality, and compliance with project requirements. Promote and support a strong safety culture by ensuring adherence to all safety policies and procedures. Assist with project closeout documentation, including punch lists, warranties, and turnover packages. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related field. 0-3 years of construction project experience (internship experience is encouraged). Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook. Experience with construction management software such as Procore, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, or Microsoft Project is a plus. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Preferred Qualifications Internship or co-op experience with a general contractor. Experience working on higher education, institutional, commercial, or healthcare construction projects. OSHA 10 certification (or willingness to obtain). Work Environment Combination of office and active construction site responsibilities. Frequent walking on active construction sites, including climbing stairs, navigating uneven terrain, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required while on job sites.
