Role Overview:
Designer is responsible for designing, modeling, and documenting sheet metal enclosures and structural steel components using SolidWorks. This role supports manufacturing and fabrication by producing accurate 3D models, detailed drawings, and bills of materials while collaborating with engineering, fabrication, and production teams. The SolidWorks Designer applies industry standards and best practices to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and aligned with customer and project requirements. Essential Duties/Responsibilities include some or all of the following: Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and 2D fabrication drawings using SolidWorks, with a focus on sheet metal enclosures and structural steel components. Design sheet metal parts including bends, flat patterns, cutouts, weldments, and mounting features. Develop structural steel models, weldments, and assemblies in accordance with project specifications and fabrication standards. Prepare fabrication-ready drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, weld symbols, and notes. Generate and maintain bills of materials (BOMs), cut lists, and supporting documentation for fabrication and procurement. Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and fabrication teams to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable. Revise and update designs based on internal reviews, customer feedback, and shop or field conditions. Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and company design guidelines. Maintain organized SolidWorks files, drawings, and revision histories. Assist with resolving design conflicts, fit-up issues, or fabrication challenges. Support continuous improvement initiatives related to design efficiency, standardization, and cost reduction. Provide technical support during fabrication and assembly as needed. Travel to fabrication shops or job sites as required. Regular attendance at work is an essential duty. Other tasks as assigned. Conform to company Quality, Environmental, and Safety policies, and comply with applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, including parts, assemblies, sheet metal, and weldments Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes and structural steel construction. Ability to create flat patterns, bend tables, and fabrication-ready drawings. Knowledge of manufacturing methods, tolerances, and material specifications. Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Ability to interpret customer specifications, drawings, and technical requirements. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and engineering documentation tools. Familiarity with ERP or PDM systems preferred.
Education, Experience, and Training:
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Drafting, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.
Experience:
3-6 years of experience using SolidWorks in a sheet metal, structural steel, or fabrication-focused environment.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. Occasional standing, walking, and visits to fabrication shops or job sites.
