Job Description

SPACES by Hollie Velten is seeking a Junior Interior Designer to join our small residential design studio in Maplewood, New Jersey. This is a hands-on design and production role supporting projects across full-service residential interiors, furnishings, renovations, kitchens, baths and custom millwork . The ideal candidate has a strong design eye paired with solid technical skills and is excited to work across both the creative and practical sides of residential design. You'll work closely with our Founder/Creative Director throughout the design process—from early concepts and space planning through drawings, sourcing, presentations, site work and installation. This is an opportunity for someone early in their professional design career who wants meaningful exposure to the full lifecycle of residential projects , rather than working within one narrow area of a larger firm. What You'll Do Assist with floor plans, furniture plans, elevations and design documentation Develop and revise drawings in AutoCAD and/or Revit Create SketchUp models and 3D studies to support design development Assist with space planning and development of design concepts Support kitchen, bath and custom millwork development alongside the design team Conduct field measurements and document existing conditions Source and Procure furniture, lighting, fabrics, wallpaper, finishes, hardware and other project materials under CD direction Prepare materials and drawings for client presentations Request and organize samples and maintain project material libraries Research products, vendors and design solutions Incorporate design revisions and field information into project drawings Participate in site visits, trade meetings and field verification as needed Assist with installation preparation, onsite installation and styling Help maintain organized project files, specifications and design documentation What We're Looking For We're looking for someone who is creative, curious, technically capable and extremely detail-oriented . You do not need to know everything yet, but you should have a strong foundation and be comfortable taking direction, working independently once a task is established, and asking thoughtful questions when something doesn't make sense.
Ideal candidates will have:
A degree or professional training in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture or a related field Professional experience in a residential interior design or architecture environment Strong AutoCAD skills; Revit experience is also welcome SketchUp and 3D visualization capabilities Understanding of floor plans, elevations, dimensions and architectural drawings Experience or familiarity with field measuring and existing-condition surveys Strong spatial thinking and an interest in developing space-planning skills An eye for furniture, materials, color, proportion and detail Strong organizational and communication skills Ability to manage several different project tasks and priorities at once Interest in both decorative interiors and architectural/renovation work Willingness to be hands-on—whether that means measuring a house, pulling samples, revising a drawing or helping style an installation Previous experience with residential renovations, kitchens, baths or custom millwork is a plus. Schedule + Location This is a 15-20 hour/week contract position , generally spread across 2-3 weekdays . The schedule will have some flexibility based on active projects, client milestones, site visits and installations, so candidates should be comfortable with a part-time schedule that may vary somewhat from week to week. This position requires regular in-person work at our Maplewood, NJ studio and onsite at residential projects throughout Northern New Jersey. Local candidates only. This is not a remote position. Our work spans furnishing projects, renovations, kitchens, baths and custom millwork. As a small studio, our team works collaboratively across the design process rather than separating creative design from technical execution. Pay:
