PrintGENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled journey-level duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of cafeteria/kitchen appliances, including refrigeration equipment, freezers, low-pressure boilers, steam tables and natural gas appliances; and performs related duties as assigned.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Appliance Repair Technician is a full journey-level class responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of electrical, mechanical and natural gas appliances and equipment located in the District's cafeterias and kitchens. Assignments encompass a variety of tasks, seldom require detailed instructions, and require sound judgment and initiative. DutiesESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Repairs, installs, services and maintains a variety of cafeteria equipment and appliances including freezers, refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, convection ovens, steamers, kettles, serving tables, hot plates, slicers, mixers, food choppers and coffee makers; repairs or replaces toasters, washing machines and clothes dryers. Services and repairs low-pressure steam tables. Diagnoses equipment problems using gauges and electric test meters and probes; operates vacuum pumps and a variety of power and hand tools used in the refrigeration, electrical and plumbing trades. Replaces or repairs compressors, thermostats, timers, pumps, motors, sensors, controls and control panels. Conducts regular preventive maintenance inspections on kitchen equipment, and steam tables. Orders parts; estimates time and material costs of repairs. Provides work direction to maintenance personnel as assigned. Prepares records of work orders; orders or purchases parts according to established procedures. Requests assistance from other skilled maintenance personnel as necessary. Observes relevant codes and EPA regulations in maintaining and repairing refrigeration equipment.OTHER DUTIES
Operates a vehicle to travel to various District sites. QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of :
Materials, equipment and methods used in the maintenance and repair of a variety of cafeteria equipment including freezers, refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, kettles, water heaters and steam tables. Electrical, refrigeration and plumbing principles and systems. State, county and city laws, regulations and ordinances related to the use of refrigeration, cafeteria equipment and steam tables. Technical aspects of field of specialty. Ability to : Perform skilled repair and maintenance work on a variety of cafeteria equipment and steam tables. Use appropriate tools and equipment skillfully. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance. Work from sketches and diagrams. Maintain routine records related to work performed. Order parts and supplies according to established guidelines. Observe health and safety regulations. Work cooperatively with others. Provide work direction to other maintenance personnel. Work independently with little direction.Education, Training, and Experience :
Graduation from high school, G.E.D. certification, or completion of higher education, and Two (2) years of journey-level experience in cafeteria equipment repair involving refrigeration, electrical, plumbing and mechanical repair. Licenses; Certificates;Special Requirements :
A valid California Driver's License. Proof of automobile liability insurance coverage. Certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Universal technician under 40 CFR part 82, subpartF. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
Listed below are examples of the physical aspects that this classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions. Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, walk, run, and crawl. Perform moderate to heavy physical exertion. Lift 50 pounds. Carry 25 pounds. Reach in all directions. Stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time. Work at indoor and outdoor environment, with possible dry, cold, and wet weather, and temperatures ranging from freezing to 121 °F.
