Job Description
Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, the Senior Mechanic performs journey-level preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on City vehicles, heavy equipment, fire apparatus, and specialty support equipment. The Senior Mechanic assists and oversees the vehicle and equipment repair work of junior mechanics and performs related duties as assigned. This classification differs from the higher-level Lead Mechanic classification, in that the Lead Mechanic performs advanced maintenance and repair work and provides daily work direction to shop staff. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following: Communicates and coordinates with the Lead Mechanic regarding work assignments, priorities, scheduling, and preventive maintenance activities. Conducts vehicle safety inspections, performs road tests, and operates fire apparatus and fleet vehicles to identify and verify repairs. Performs skilled mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic diagnostic and repair work on all City and fire-related vehicles and equipment. Performs major overhauls on gasoline, diesel, propane, and CNG engines and related components. Diagnoses and repairs complex drivetrain, suspension, steering, and brake systems, including air, hydraulic, and electronic braking systems. Inspects, maintains, and repairs fire pumps, aerial devices, and pressure control systems to meet NFPA and OEM specifications. Performs welding, fabrication, and upfit/retrofit work as necessary for emergency vehicles and specialized installations. Performs field diagnostics and emergency response repairs for vehicles, fire apparatus, and equipment during and after normal working hours. Uses computerized diagnostic tools, scan software, and service manuals to perform advanced troubleshooting. Reads and interprets codes, schematics, blueprints, and repair manuals to identify repair procedures and component specifications. Coordinates with manufacturers and vendors to obtain technical support, order specialized parts, and verify equipment compatibility. Provides training and technical guidance to mechanics and service personnel on fire apparatus maintenance and diagnostic procedures. Maintains accurate maintenance records, timekeeping, and parts inventory documentation. Ensures shop and field operations are conducted in compliance with OSHA, NFPA, and departmental safety requirements. Participates in technical training programs to maintain certifications and stay current with evolving technologies and standards. Responds to after-hours emergencies, including vehicle, apparatus, and fuel system incidents. Maintains clean, safe, and organized work areas and shop equipment. Serves as a liaison with Fire Department staff regarding equipment readiness, repairs, and preventive maintenance schedules. Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
