Job Title:
Laser Metrology Technician Job Description This role focuses on operating advanced laser measurement equipment on-site and in the lab to support alignment, inspection, and reverse engineering projects. You will work with cutting-edge metrology tools such as laser trackers, scan arms, and coordinate measuring machines to perform precision measurements on hydro-turbines and large industrial components. The position suits a technically inclined professional who enjoys hands-on work, problem-solving, and frequent travel while gaining extensive on-the-job training and mentorship. Responsibilities Travel locally and nationally to customer sites to execute metrology projects, typically spending about two weeks per month on the road with occasional three-week assignments. Operate and set up laser measurement devices, including laser trackers, scan arms, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), and related laser measuring tools. Initiate, configure, and manage measurement software in both field and laboratory environments to support accurate data collection. Perform precision alignment and inspection of hydro-turbines and other large components in power generation and manufacturing facilities. Support reverse engineering and 3D modeling projects by capturing accurate measurement data and ensuring data integrity. Transport, set up, calibrate, and maintain laser measurement equipment for both field and lab use, ensuring safe and reliable operation. Prepare equipment and software at the start of the day, typically beginning at 7:00 AM, to ensure readiness for field or lab work. Travel to hydro or manufacturing sites when assigned to field-based projects and coordinate with site personnel as needed. Conduct detailed measurements and alignments according to project specifications and client requirements, following GD&T principles. Document measurement results clearly and accurately, and communicate findings to project engineers and other stakeholders. Pack, secure, and store equipment properly at the end of each project or workday to prevent damage and ensure readiness for future use. Adhere to safety practices while working around industrial equipment and at heights up to approximately 50 inches. Troubleshoot basic equipment and software issues on-site using hand tools, technical knowledge, and problem-solving skills. Essential Skills Strong willingness and ability to travel locally and nationally, with an expectation of being on the road approximately 50% of the time. Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) concepts and their application in precision measurement. Strong math skills to support accurate measurement, alignment, and data interpretation. Ability to operate laser measuring devices and related metrology equipment after training, including laser trackers, scan arms, and CMMs. Proficiency with basic computer skills and comfort working with measurement and inspection software. Capability to perform equipment set-up, calibration, and basic maintenance in both lab and field settings. Ability to read and interpret blueprints to guide measurement and inspection tasks. Troubleshooting skills for resolving issues with equipment, software, and measurement setups. Comfort working at heights up to approximately 50 inches in industrial environments. Ability to use hand tools safely and effectively for equipment setup and adjustment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Engineering or STEM-related schooling or coursework is welcomed and considered an asset. Familiarity with metrology concepts and the science of measurement is beneficial. Experience with laser technology or laser-based measurement systems is advantageous. Exposure to power generation, hydro-turbine, or heavy manufacturing environments is a plus. Experience with reverse engineering, 3D modeling, or component inspection is helpful. The standard schedule follows a first-shift pattern, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with occasional extended hours related to travel or project demands. Work is split between an office and lab environment at the headquarters in Lackawanna and various field locations, including power generation and manufacturing sites. The role involves frequent travel, with roughly half of the time spent in the field, and includes working around industrial equipment and at moderate heights while adhering to safety protocols. Dress expectations align with a professional industrial and field setting, suitable for working in both office and plant environments. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Lackawanna, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $55000.00- $105000.
