Job Description
The Journeyman Machine Repair Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing food processing and packaging equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and sanitary operations. This role supports continuous production while maintaining compliance with food safety, quality, and regulatory standards such as USDA, FDA, and GMP requirements. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems on food processing and packaging equipment Maintain and repair mixers, conveyors, fillers, slicers, ovens, freezers, pumps, packaging machines, and automated production lines Perform preventive and predictive maintenance to minimize downtime and ensure equipment reliability Disassemble, clean, sanitize, and reassemble equipment in compliance with GMP, HACCP, and sanitation standards Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and OEM manuals Troubleshoot PLCs, sensors, VFDs, and control systems common to food manufacturing environments Perform food-grade welding, fabrication, and machining using stainless steel and approved materials Ensure all repairs meet food safety, quality, and regulatory requirements (FDA/USDA, OSHA) Follow and enforce lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, and machine guarding procedures Accurately document maintenance activities, parts usage, and corrective actions Respond promptly to production line issues to reduce downtime and product loss Work closely with production, quality, and sanitation teams to support operational goals Mentor apprentices or less experienced maintenance technicians Required Qualifications Journeyman status through an accredited apprenticeship program or equivalent experience High school diploma or GED required; technical degree or certification preferred Minimum 5-8 years of industrial maintenance experience, preferably in food or beverage manufacturing Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical controls, hydraulics, and pneumatics Experience working in regulated manufacturing environments Preferred Skills and Experience Food manufacturing or packaging equipment experience PLC troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar platforms) Stainless steel welding (TIG preferred) and fabrication Understanding of GMP, HACCP, and sanitation procedures Experience with conveyors, robotics, vision systems, and automated packaging lines Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Physical Demands Ability to lift up to 50 lbs Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and reaching Ability to work in cold, wet, hot, or refrigerated environments Exposure to noise, steam, cleaning chemicals, and food-grade lubricants Work Environment Food manufacturing or processing facility Strict adherence to hygiene, sanitation, and PPE requirements 12 hour night shift: 7pm-7am Licenses & Certifications (Preferred) Journeyman Card or trade certification Food Safety or HACCP training Electrical or mechanical certification Forklift, scissor lift, or aerial lift certification OSHA safety training
