CDL Utilities is a leading provider of telecommunication services, specializing in underground and aerial installation of coax and fiber optic cabling. We also perform excavation and underground installation and maintenance services for utility providers in electric, gas, and water systems. For over two decades, CDL Utilities has built a strong reputation for quality, service, and safety.
Overview:
CDL Utilities is seeking a skilled and reliable Fiber & Aerial Technician to support the installation, maintenance, and upgrade of fiber optic infrastructure across both aerial and underground environments. This role is ideal for a well-rounded technician with hands-on experience in both fiber splicing and aerial line work. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, dependable, and comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and at elevated heights. This position may require extended hours, weekend work for emergencies, and travel as needed.
Responsibilities:
Install, prepare, splice, and test fiber optic cabling in ISP and OSP environments Perform aerial construction, including strand installation, lashing, and overlash work Install fiber using both self-supporting and strand-supported methods Operate and maintain equipment such as fusion splicers, OTDRs, bucket trucks, and aerial lifts Read and interpret construction prints, utility maps, OSP drawings, and field documentation Ensure proper cable placement, including sag, tension, and clearance requirements Identify unsafe conditions (e.g., poles, equipment, environment) and stop work when necessary Complete daily production reports, redlines, and job documentation (including photos) Communicate effectively with crew members, leadership, inspectors, and customers Support or lead field crews, including task delegation and on-site coordination when needed Train and mentor junior technicians as applicable Maintain tools, equipment, and a clean, compliant job site Follow all safety policies, OSHA standards, and company procedures
Qualifications:
3+ years of experience in fiber optic installation, splicing, and testing 3+ years of hands-on aerial fiber construction experience (strand, lashing, overlash) Experience working in active utility pole environments Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and utility safety standards (NESC knowledge preferred) Ability to read and interpret prints, maps, and technical documents Valid driver's license (CDL preferred) Must be at least 21 years of age Ability to pass drug, criminal, and background checks Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team Willingness to travel
Preferred Qualifications:
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification Aerial lift / bucket truck certification Utility pole safety and fall protection training Prior leadership or crew lead experience Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus Experience in utility construction or related fields
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work at heights for extended periods Ability to climb poles when required Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions Willingness to travel and work extended hours as needed
Schedule:
8-10 hour shifts Overtime and weekends as needed Occasional travel may be required
