For more than 25 years, we have helped industrial and municipal customers design, modernize, troubleshoot, and support automated control systems. We are looking for an Automation Project Engineer who enjoys solving problems, learning how things work, and seeing the systems they design and program operate in the real world. At Martz, you won't spend your career working on the same machine or process over and over. Our projects vary by customer, industry, technology, and complexity. One project may involve modernizing a manufacturing line with new PLCs, HMIs, and VFDs. Another may involve troubleshooting a production system that is down. The next could involve developing PLC, SCADA, and telemetry systems for a municipal water or wastewater facility. Our engineers have the opportunity to be involved throughout the project lifecycle — design it, program it, test it, start it up, troubleshoot it, and see it run. Two Primary Markets Our Automation Project Engineers primarily support one of two areas based on their background, interests, strengths, and company needs: Industrial Automation Projects may include manufacturing, food and beverage production, packaging, material handling, process systems, production-line upgrades, equipment modernization, plant troubleshooting, VFDs, instrumentation, PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems. Water & Wastewater Automation Projects may include water and wastewater treatment facilities, pumping systems, wells, remote telemetry, instrumentation, PLC and HMI systems, SCADA infrastructure, and modernization of municipal and industrial water systems. While engineers may primarily work within one market, there are opportunities to collaborate across both. What You'll Do Develop, modify, test, and troubleshoot PLC programs, HMI applications, and SCADA systems . Work with customers and project teams to understand processes, identify problems, and develop practical automation solutions. Work with VFDs, motor controls, instrumentation, remote I/O, industrial communications, and networking equipment . Develop or review electrical control drawings, I/O lists, control narratives, network architectures, and related project documentation. Collaborate with Martz's in-house drafting team and control panel shop to take projects from design through fabrication and testing. Perform system testing, commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting at customer facilities. Coordinate with electricians, contractors, equipment manufacturers, vendors, and customer personnel. Manage assigned project responsibilities, schedules, and customer communication based on your experience and capabilities. Provide customer and operator training when appropriate. Support existing customers when systems need troubleshooting, upgrades, expansion, or modernization. For candidates with stronger experience, the position may also include leading projects, reviewing the work of others, mentoring developing engineers, and helping improve Martz engineering standards and practices. What We're Looking For We care more about what you can do and what you're capable of learning than a specific degree or number of years on a résumé. A strong candidate will be able to demonstrate experience or ability in several of the following areas: PLC programming and troubleshooting. HMI, OIT, or SCADA development. Electrical control systems and control panels. VFDs, motor controls, and instrumentation. Reading and understanding electrical schematics, P&IDs, control narratives, or similar technical documents. Industrial communications and networking. System startup, commissioning, or field troubleshooting. Diagnosing unfamiliar technical problems and developing practical solutions. Communicating effectively with customers, vendors, electricians, and other team members. Working independently while knowing when to ask questions or involve other members of the team. We don't expect one person to know every platform, every industry, or every part of the project lifecycle. Helpful, But Not Required Experience in any of the following is beneficial, but not required to apply : Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley PLCs. Siemens or other industrial PLC platforms. VTScada, Ignition, FactoryTalk, or other
HMI/SCADA
platforms. Industrial manufacturing or food and beverage automation. Water and wastewater controls. AutoCAD or AutoCAD Electrical. Control panel design or fabrication. Industrial networking, telemetry, databases, or OT infrastructure. Project management or technical leadership. Mentoring or training other technical employees. Formal education or technical training in automation, electrical systems, engineering, mechatronics, computer science, or a related field. Relevant skills may come from systems integration, plant maintenance, machine building, electrical work, technical school, college, military experience, vendor training, or hands-on industry experience. A specific college degree and a specific number of years of experience are not required.Compensation & Overtime Base Pay:
$75,000 - $125,000 per year equivalent , depending on demonstrated technical capability, experience, independence, and project responsibility. Automation Project Engineers at Martz are hourly employees rather than salaried employees . When a project requires additional hours, you are compensated for the additional time worked. Overtime Is Calculated by the Day — Not Just the Week Our overtime structure is designed so employees don't lose overtime they have already earned simply because they take time off elsewhere in the week. Hours worked beyond 8 hours in a day are paid at 1.5x the employee's regular hourly rate.Saturday:

All hours worked are paid at 2.0x . This can make a significant difference during project startups and planned weekend shutdowns. For example, if you work extended hours or a Saturday shutdown and then take time off later in the week, the overtime you earned on those days remains overtime. Work Environment & Travel This is an in-person position based in Berwick, Pennsylvania , with a combination of office engineering, shop testing, and work at customer facilities. Most customer work is local or regional, although some projects involve overnight or out-of-state travel. Travel requirements vary depending on project assignments and the market you primarily support. Candidates do not need to currently live within a specific radius of Berwick, but must be able to reliably commute to our Berwick office or relocate within a reasonable timeframe.
