Automation Technician / PLC Programmer Job Description Currently seeking a Automation Technician/Engineer to develop, program, and support automation systems used in municipal water, wastewater, and industrial applications. This role is responsible for designing and maintaining PLC-based control systems, supporting SCADA and HMI platforms, troubleshooting automation issues, and assisting with system startup and commissioning activities. Responsibilities Develop, test, and implement PLC programs that control automation panels and related systems. Design and program HMI applications for touchscreen interfaces, including creating clear and user-friendly graphics and navigation. Support field service technicians during system startups by providing technical guidance and troubleshooting assistance. Respond to support calls from the field and remotely connect to systems to diagnose and resolve control and automation issues. Troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and control system problems, including hardware, software, and communication faults. Configure and work with Rockwell and Allen-Bradley PLC platforms, including CompactLogix and MicroLogix controllers. Program and maintain Wonderware / Wonderware InTouch HMI applications for automation systems. Apply knowledge of pneumatics and automation systems to ensure proper operation and integration with control logic. Collaborate with controls engineering and service teams to improve system performance and reliability. Document PLC and HMI programs, configurations, and changes to support ongoing maintenance and future upgrades. Essential Skills Associate's degree in electrical engineering. At least 2 years of experience with PLC programming. At least 2 years of experience working with Rockwell and Allen-Bradley PLC platforms. At least 2 years of experience with pneumatics in an automation or controls environment. Hands-on experience with PLC programming for industrial or municipal automation systems. Proficiency in HMI programming and development for touchscreen interfaces. Strong troubleshooting skills for PLCs, HMIs, and automation control systems. Experience with Rockwell software tools and Allen-Bradley PLC hardware. Ability to support remote and field-based technicians with clear, solution-focused communication. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with CompactLogix and MicroLogix controllers. Experience with Wonderware and Wonderware InTouch HMI platforms. Experience in controls engineering and automation systems integration. Understanding of pneumatics as part of broader automation and control systems. Ability to create intuitive HMI graphics and operator interfaces. Interest in long-term career growth within an expanding automation and controls organization. Work Environment This role supports automation systems that are critical to municipal operations, providing a stable and purpose-driven work environment. The position initially requires on-site work to collaborate closely with service technicians and engineering teams, with the opportunity to transition to a remote or hybrid schedule (1-2 days per week) after approximately 8-12 months of employment. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $50.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
