Instrumentation & Electrical (I&E) Technician

Position Summary

The I&E Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical and instrumentation systems used in industrial operations. This position ensures equipment reliability, safe operation, and compliance with company and regulatory standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Install, calibrate, test, and maintain instrumentation and electrical equipment.

Troubleshoot electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and control systems.

Read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, loop drawings, and technical manuals.

Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on motors, transmitters, control valves, PLCs, and related equipment.

Diagnose and repair issues with instrumentation and electrical systems to minimize downtime.

Ensure all work is performed safely and in compliance with OSHA and company policies.

Assist with start-ups, shutdowns, and plant turnarounds as needed.

Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.

Coordinate with operations, maintenance, and contractors to complete assigned tasks.

Participate in safety meetings, audits, and training programs. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required.

Technical degree or certification in Instrumentation, Electrical Technology, or related field preferred.

Minimum of 3-5 years of industrial I&E experience preferred.

Knowledge of PLCs, DCS systems, transmitters, motor controls, and electrical troubleshooting.

Ability to use testing and calibration equipment.

Strong understanding of industrial safety standards and procedures.

Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and enter confined spaces when required.

Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work extended hours as needed. Work Environment

This position operates in an industrial plant environment and may require overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts.

JOB STEPJourneyman

• Typically 3 years and above documented field experience in chosen craft discipline with ability to read and interpret instructions and document, plan and perform work activities independently.

Certified Journeyman

• Requires attainment of NCCER certifications written and/or practical.

Leadman

• Provides leadership, instruction, and guidance to other craft workers in work crew, providing assistance to Foreman, while working in the capacity of a journeyman.

SUMMARY

Inspects, tests, adjusts, and repairs electric, electronic, mechanical, and pneumatic instruments and systems utilized by production and manufacturing equipment to ensure adherence to established performance levels and product quality.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Inspects meters, indicators, and gauges to detect abnormal fluctuations.
• Tests accuracy of flow meters, pressure gauges, temperature indicators, controllers, radiation counters or detectors, and other recording, indicating or controlling instruments to locate defective components in system, using test equipment, such as pressure gauges, mercury manometers, potentiometers, pulse and signal generators, oscilloscopes, transistor curve tracers, and ammeters, voltmeters, and watt-meters•Traces out and tests electronic solid state and vacuum tube circuitry and components to locate defective parts in analog and digital, protection, or radiation monitoring systems, using test equipment, schematics, and maintenance manuals.
• Removes defective instruments from system, decontaminates, disassembles, and cleans instruments, and replaces defective parts, using hand tools.
• Reassembles instruments and replaces instruments in system, using hand tools
• Lubricates instruments and replaces defective wiring and tubing
• Calibrates readings on instruments according to standards and adjusts phasing and aligns stages to ensure accuracy of recording and indicating function
• Records calibrations made, parts and components used, and inventory of parts on hand.
• Prepares schematic drawings, sketches, and reports to reflect changes or alterations made in instruments
• Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules.

Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

May require a high school diploma or its equivalent and previous years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
