JOB SUMMARY

The Aviation Support Unit (ASU) oversees and manages the Safety Management System, aircraft maintenance, quality assurance, datalink/special mission equipment, and asset management for a fleet of over 100 aircraft nationwide. ASU ensures the airworthiness and mission readiness of the entire fleet, upholding the highest standards of operational excellence and safety across all missions.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Must be a U.S. citizen Must be able to obtain a Top Secret-SCI clearance Frequent travel between Quantico, Stafford, and Richmond.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires some strenuous physical exertion such as climbing tall ladders or towers, lifting heavy objects in excess of 50 pounds, and crouching or crawling in small work areas.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Spends time in work situations which exposes the incumbent to potentially hazardous situations. These include electrical shocks, falls from high towers, extreme weather conditions (rain, snow, ice, or high winds), and similar situations. Safety precautions are required, including accompaniment by Special Agents or other technicians when performing duties considered hazardous to life and limb and utilization of safety procedures while on high towers. Protective clothing and gear as well as observance of safety procedures are required. Must work under conditions of extreme stress and tension as a result of need to maintain equipment in optimum working condition.

MAJOR DUTIES GS-12

Assist in installation, configuration, and maintenance of airborne datalink and video transmission systems, including DVB-T, MANET, ATG, and LEO satellite communication platforms. Support troubleshooting and calibration of RF transmitters/receivers, IP networking devices, and airborne communication interfaces to ensure operational readiness. Support integration and operation of video management systems (e.g., Milestone VMS) and tactical applications (ATAK/WinTAK). Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, software updates, and configuration management for special mission datalink systems. In addition to the above : GS-13 Serve as the subject matter expert and technical lead for aviation datalink and special mission communication systems, including DVB-T, MANET, ATG, and LEO satellite networks. Design, integrate, and validate end-to-end datalink architectures, including RF, IP transport, and video management solutions supporting FBI special mission aircraft. Lead troubleshooting, testing, and certification of complex datalink configurations, ensuring interoperability among aircraft, ground stations, and tactical users.

Specialized Experience (SE) GS-12: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-11 grade level.

SE is defined as follows:

Maintaining, installing, operating, testing and troubleshooting complex communications/network systems or subsystems to ensure efficiency. Experience in electronic surveillance between tempest and intrusion detection; electronic communication systems such as wireless networks; local area networks; wide area networks and electronic security. Communicating with technical and investigative personnel; entities within the law enforcement and communications/networking community; and equipment manufacturer's representatives. Researching, developing, and operating equipment by applying experimental technique that may result in improvement of existing systems, modification, or partial overhaul.

In addition to the above:

GS-13: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.

SE is defined as follows:

Experience managing technical projects or leading teams in aviation or federal special mission communication programs. Desired skills are NOT mandatory and will NOT be utilized to minimally qualify applicants.

Desired Skills:

Knowledge of aviation or military data/video transport systems (e.g., Janteq, MANET, or GoGo). Experience supporting field operations or mission deployments requiring portable or aircraft-mounted communications. Familiarity with FAA and NTIA frequency management procedures or related federal communication spectrum coordination. Demonstrate expertise in RF and IP-based datalink communications supporting airborne or tactical mission systems. Experience designing and integrating aviation datalink systems including DVB-T, MANET, ATG, or satellite architectures. Proficiency in IP networking (routing, switching, VLANs, QoS, multicast, VPNs, and firewall management). Education Education may not be substituted for specialized experience at the GS 12 or higher.
