Fiber Splicer Job Description A Fiber Splicer is a skilled technician responsible for installing, splicing, testing, and maintaining fiber optic cables used in telecommunications networks. They ensure high-quality connections that support internet, phone, and data services. Key Responsibilities Splice fiber optic cables using fusion or mechanical splicing equipment Prepare and install fiber optic cables (aerial, underground, and inside buildings) Test fiber lines using equipment such as OTDRs (Optical Time Domain Reflectometers) Troubleshoot and repair damaged fiber optic systems Read and interpret network design plans, schematics, and blueprints Ensure proper cable handling, labeling, and documentation Maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition Follow safety regulations and industry standards Required Skills & Qualifications Knowledge of fiber optic splicing techniques and equipment Ability to operate testing tools (OTDR, power meters, light sources) Understanding of telecommunications systems and infrastructure Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions Physical ability to lift equipment and work in confined spaces or at heights High school diploma or equivalent (technical training preferred) Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in telecommunications or cable installation Valid driver's license Experience with aerial lift equipment or bucket trucks Work Environment Outdoor and indoor job sites May involve climbing poles, working in trenches, or confined spaces Travel to different job locations is often required May include overtime, nights, or emergency repair work
