Electrician and Instrumentation Technician Job Description This role combines hands-on electrical work with advanced instrumentation and control systems support in a manufacturing environment. You will install, program, maintain, and repair , VFDs, MMIs, and a wide range of industrial instrumentation, while ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations in line with Good Manufacturing Practices. Responsibilities Program, troubleshoot, and maintain PLC, VFD, and MMI systems, including associated documentation and Allen-Bradley software. Specify, source, and order parts and components required to complete repairs, upgrades, and new installations. Complete accurate daily maintenance and repair logs, documenting work performed and parts used. Perform electrical construction work such as running conduit, pulling wires, and extending or connecting related electrical circuits. Clean and maintain the work area to support a safe and organized maintenance environment. Comply with all safety rules, plant policies, and FDA-defined Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). Communicate effectively with production, maintenance, and engineering personnel to coordinate work and minimize downtime. Install, maintain, repair, overhaul, calibrate, and test a wide variety of industrial instrumentation used to record, indicate, control, and regulate level, flow, pressure, temperature, position, and water analysis. Conduct periodic preventive maintenance inspections of all metering and control instruments, diagnosing existing or potential issues. Clean, lubricate, calibrate, and adjust instruments and control devices as conditions indicate to ensure optimal performance. Lay out, install, and place into service new metering, controlling, and recording devices, including required calibration. Support the reliability of pumps, valves, conveyors, processing equipment, and related systems as part of overall maintenance responsibilities. Essential Skills At least 2 years of experience working in a manufacturing or production setting. Hands-on experience as a maintenance mechanic or millwright in an industrial environment. Proficiency with electrical systems up to 480 volts, including safe troubleshooting and repair practices. Experience working with PLCs, including programming, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Familiarity with VFDs and MMIs and their integration into industrial control systems. Ability to install, maintain, and calibrate industrial instrumentation for level, flow, pressure, temperature, position, and water analysis. Experience working with proximity switches and other industrial sensing devices. High School Diploma or GED. Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills to interpret manuals, schematics, and work orders and complete documentation accurately. Ability to perform preventive maintenance and diagnostics on mechanical and electrical equipment such as pumps, valves, conveyors, and processing lines. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in large-scale manufacturing environments similar to high-volume packaging, electronics, or equipment production operations. Background as a maintenance technician supporting automated production lines. Comfort working with industrial control and automation software, including Allen-Bradley platforms. Strong troubleshooting skills for both electrical and mechanical systems. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams in production, maintenance, and engineering. Work Environment This position is based in a manufacturing plant environment that experiences seasonal temperature extremes, with hot conditions in the summer and cold conditions in the winter. The facility is loud, and employees should be comfortable working around industrial equipment and machinery. The production area may have coffee grinds on the floor, which are swept daily but can occasionally be slippery, requiring attention to footing and adherence to safety practices. You will work around electrical systems, industrial instrumentation, pumps, valves, conveyors, and processing equipment, using standard maintenance tools and test equipment in a hands-on, industrial setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Suffolk, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $35.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
