The Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting the design and development of advanced communication and electronic warfare systems for defense applications. As an Intern, you will work alongside experienced Engineers contributing to the design, modeling, simulation, prototyping, and testing of advanced electronic systems and antenna technologies. The Intern will gain exposure to real-world engineering processes, system integration activities, and laboratory testing in a collaborative, mission-focused environment. The St. Petersburg facility specializes in the development of embedded communication systems, Software Defined Radios (SDR), phased array antenna systems, and secure RF architectures supporting Department of Defense customers.
Primary Responsibilities:
Support the design, development, and testing of sophisticated electronic hardware and firmware for communication and electronic warfare systems. Assist in testing RF, analog, and digital components and subassemblies to verify compliance with design requirements and technical documentation. Contribute to translating conceptual designs into detailed electrical schematics, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and printed circuit board (PCB) layout documentation under the guidance of senior engineers. Perform modeling and simulation of electrical designs using industry-standard tools and assist in transitioning designs to prototype fabrication and laboratory validation. Support the design and fabrication of RF and mixed-signal test fixtures used to validate prototype Circuit Card Assemblies (CCAs). Assist in the selection and evaluation of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components based on datasheet analysis, availability, cost, and reliability considerations. Document test results, support troubleshooting activities, and participate in engineering design reviews.
Basic Qualifications:
Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited institution. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary engineering environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and/or PowerPoint. U.S. Citizenship required. Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with schematic capture and PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, KiCAD, Cadence/OrCAD, or equivalent. Coursework or hands-on experience in digital logic design using VHDL and FPGA, CPLD, or microcontroller platforms. Familiarity with FPGA development environments such as Xilinx Vivado, Intel (Altera) Quartus, or equivalent toolchains. Experience with VHDL simulation tools such as ModelSim, Active-HDL, Xilinx Simulator, or vendor-provided simulation tools. Exposure to RF or electromagnetic simulation tools such as HFSS, Microwave Office, or similar. Experience with modeling and analysis tools such as MATLAB or Python. Familiarity with programming languages such as C/C++, MATLAB, or similar languages used in embedded or test environments. Basic laboratory experience using test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and logic analyzers. If you're looking for comfort, keep scrolling. At Leidos, we outthink, outbuild, and outpace the status quo — because the mission demands it. We're not hiring followers. We're recruiting the ones who disrupt, provoke, and refuse to fail. Step 10 is ancient history. We're already at step 30 — and moving faster than anyone else dares.
