Mfg Automation/Controls Engineer 10800 Belmont Avenue, Franklin Park, IL 60131 $81,031.71 - $97,586.58 a year - Full-time $81,031.71 - $97,586.58 a year - Full-time We are seeking a Controls / Automation Engineer to design, program, install, and maintain automated control systems for our manufacturing operations. The successful candidate will work cross-functionally with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to improve productivity, reliability, and safety through automation. This role combines hands-on troubleshooting with project engineering and is ideal for someone who enjoys both the design phase and seeing systems run on the plant floor.
  • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design, develop, and implement
PLC, HMI
programs for new and existing equipment (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, or equivalent platforms). Specify and integrate sensors, actuators, VFDs, servo drives, motion control systems, and industrial network components (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, DeviceNet, EitherCat) Develop electrical schematics, panel layouts, and I/O lists using AutoCAD Electrical Lead controls aspects of capital projects from concept through commissioning, including FAT/SAT, startup, and operator training. Troubleshoot and resolve controls-related downtime issues on production equipment; provide on-call support as needed. Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on cycle time reduction, scrap reduction, and equipment uptime. Ensure all controls work complies with
NEC, NFPA 79, OSHA, UL
508A, and applicable machine safety standards (ISO 13849 / IEC 62061).
Develop and maintain documentation:
control narratives, software backups, change logs, and as-built drawings. Manage outside integrators and equipment vendors; review vendor controls designs and code. Mentor technicians and junior engineers on controls best practices.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or related discipline (equivalent experience considered).
3-5+ years of hands-on industrial controls experience. Proficient in PLC programming (Studio 5000 / RSLogix, TIA Portal, or similar), HMI development Working knowledge of industrial networking, VFDs, servo motion, and safety circuits (safety relays, safety PLCs). Ability to read and create electrical schematics and P&IDs. Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical systems. Willingness to work on the plant floor
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with robotics integration Vision system experience (Cognex, Keyence). Six Sigma / Lean Manufacturing exposure.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Combination of office and manufacturing floor environments.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in proximity to operating machinery while following all PPE and LOTO procedures.
