This project-based role focuses on the installation, integration, and commissioning of new automated equipment for expansion sites, rather than day-to-day factory support. The Controls Engineer will design and program control systems, troubleshoot PLC applications, support new industrial automation machinery, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver robust, scalable automation solutions across multiple facilities. Responsibilities Install, integrate, and commission new automated equipment for expansion sites and capital projects. Perform hands-on troubleshooting and programming of PLC applications, primarily using Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and Omron platforms. Design electrical panels and control schematics using AutoCAD Electrical, ensuring compliance with internal standards and industry best practices. Provide technical support for new industrial automated machinery, including start-up, optimization, and ongoing improvements. Work cross-functionally with other engineering disciplines, skilled trades, and project managers to execute control system projects from concept through completion. Interface with technical resources, vendors, and suppliers to identify, specify, and procure required components and parts for control systems. Assist with the integration of machinery into the Ignition platform and other SCADA systems to enable data collection, visualization, and control. Contribute to control system design, including architecture, hardware selection, and communication strategies for machine-to-machine and plant-level networking. Develop, modify, and maintain PLC programs, HMI screens, and related control logic, including ladder logic and other programming languages as required. Troubleshoot electrical and control system issues in the field and in the office, diagnosing root causes and implementing effective corrective actions. Support project planning activities, including scope definition, scheduling, and coordination of resources for control system projects. Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that automation solutions meet safety, reliability, and performance requirements. Essential Skills Associate degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Engineering, or a closely related field. At least 5 years of experience programming and troubleshooting Allen-Bradley PLCs in an industrial environment. Strong proficiency in PLC troubleshooting and programming, including ladder logic and related control system languages. Hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation platforms for control system design and implementation. Experience using AutoCAD Electrical to design electrical panels and control schematics. Practical experience with Ignition or other SCADA platforms for monitoring and control of industrial systems. Solid understanding of control system engineering principles, including control system design and integration. Experience with HMI development and configuration for industrial automation applications. Knowledge of industrial Ethernet networking and machine communication for control systems. Ability to provide technical support for industrial automated machinery, including troubleshooting and optimization. Strong troubleshooting skills for electrical and control systems in a manufacturing or industrial setting. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with Siemens and Omron PLC platforms. Understanding of medium voltage systems, such as transformers, switchgear, and switchboards. Project management experience, including coordinating schedules, resources, and deliverables for automation projects. Familiarity with SCADA systems beyond Ignition and their integration with plant-floor equipment. Experience with control system design for complex industrial machinery and processes. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional engineering teams, skilled trades, and project stakeholders. Strong communication skills to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. Detail-oriented approach with a focus on reliability, safety, and continuous improvement in automation solutions. Work Environment This position combines office-based engineering work with time spent in factory environments. The Controls Engineer will spend most of their time in an office setting designing and planning control system projects, programming PLCs, and developing electrical schematics using tools such as AutoCAD Electrical and Rockwell / Allen-Bradley software, as well as working with the Ignition platform and other SCADA technologies. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The role includes approximately 40% travel to company sites in Canada, Tennessee, and Franklin, Indiana to support equipment installation, commissioning, and project execution. On-site work may involve being in production areas around industrial machinery and automation equipment, collaborating directly with plant personnel and skilled trades. The culture emphasizes project-based work within a division engineering and capital projects team, offering exposure to a variety of technologies and automation platforms rather than routine, reactive factory support.
