CONTROLS ENGINEER

FORT WAYNE, IN
This client is unable to support candidates that will require sponsorship now or in the future. Job Description This role sits within the Research and Development Engineering Division of a global leader in magnet wire manufacturing. The Controls Engineer designs, programs, and supports advanced control systems and industrial automation solutions for new processes and equipment. The position focuses on project-based work rather than reactive factory support, and involves hands-on PLC programming, electrical design, and integration of automated machinery across multiple platforms, including Rockwell, Omron, and Ignition. Responsibilities Troubleshoot and program PLC applications, with a primary focus on Allen-Bradley platforms and additional exposure to Siemens and Omron systems. Design electrical panels and schematics using AutoCAD Electrical, ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant control system designs. Work cross-functionally with other engineering disciplines, skilled trades, and project managers to deliver complete control system solutions. Provide technical support for new industrial automated machinery, including commissioning, optimization, and ongoing improvements. Interface with technical resources and vendors to identify, select, and procure electrical and control components for new and existing systems. Assist with integrating machinery and control systems into the Ignition platform and other SCADA environments. Support control system design activities related to medium-voltage equipment such as transformers, switchgears, and switchboards, as needed. Contribute to project planning and execution, including scheduling, documentation, and coordination of control system deliverables. Ensure reliable machine communication and robust Ethernet networking for industrial control systems. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance automation performance, system reliability, and safety. Essential Skills Associate degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Engineering, or a closely related field. At least 5 years of experience programming and troubleshooting Allen-Bradley PLCs. At least 5 years of experience using AutoCAD, including AutoCAD Electrical, for electrical panel design and schematics. Hands-on experience with PLC troubleshooting and control system design. Proficiency with Rockwell automation platforms and Allen-Bradley PLCs. Experience with industrial automation, including control systems, HMI, and machine communication. Strong electrical knowledge, including electrical design, panel layout, and schematic development. Experience with Ignition or other SCADA platforms. Familiarity with Ethernet networking in industrial environments. Demonstrated project management experience related to control systems or automation projects. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with Siemens and Omron PLCs and related control platforms. Experience supporting new industrial automated machinery from concept through commissioning. Exposure to medium-voltage systems such as transformers, switchgears, and switchboards. Experience integrating machinery and control systems into Ignition or similar SCADA platforms. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineering, skilled trades, and project management. Strong troubleshooting skills for electrical and control system issues in complex automated environments. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a project-based engineering role. Clear and professional communication skills for documentation, technical discussions, and stakeholder updates. Work Environment The position combines office and factory settings, with most time spent designing and planning control system projects in an engineering environment. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The role includes approximately 40% travel to company sites in Canada, Tennessee, and Franklin, Indiana, to support project implementation and commissioning. You will work with modern automation technologies, including Rockwell, Omron, Ignition, SCADA systems, and industrial networking equipment, in a collaborative, project-focused engineering culture. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Wayne, IN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $45.00/hr.
