In this role, you will evaluate candidate OEM electrical and electro-mechanical parts for FAA Parts Manufacturing Approval (PMA) development, lead the reverse engineering effort, and drive the full certification lifecycle — from functional and qualification testing through production acceptance. You will work closely with FAA Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs) and cross-functional teams to ensure that PMA parts are rigorously demonstrated to be form, fit, and function interchangeable with their OEM counterparts and compliant with all applicable airworthiness requirements. This is a company that has demonstrated 20% annual growth since 2021. Employees enjoy the collaborative work environment and tend to spend their whole career working there.
Job Duties :
Evaluate candidate OEM electrical and electro-mechanical components for PMA development feasibility, including review of part applicability, regulatory certification basis, and reverse engineering complexity Lead the reverse engineering of OEM electrical and electro-mechanical parts, developing complete design documentation including schematics, component specifications, material requirements, and performance parameters Determine the functional tests required to demonstrate that PMA parts are form, fit, and function interchangeable with the corresponding OEM parts Collaborate with FAA DERs to identify applicable airworthiness standards and determine what qualification testing (such as
RTCA DO-160
environmental and EMI/EMC testing) is required to substantiate airworthiness compliance Plan, oversee, and coordinate all required qualification testing, including engagement with third-party testing laboratories and management of test witnessing and documentation Determine production Acceptance Test requirements for each PMA part and develop the associated Acceptance Test Procedures (ATPs) Design and specify the Acceptance Test Equipment (ATE) required to support production-level testing, ensuring repeatability, traceability, and compatibility with manufacturing operations Coordinate the manufacture of PMA parts and any associated test equipment, working across engineering, quality, and supply chain functions Prepare and support FAA engineering substantiation packages, including test plans, test reports, compliance matrices, and supporting analyses Maintain thorough, traceable engineering records in support of PMA applications and ongoing regulatory compliance
Requirements :
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related discipline 3-10 years of experience in electrical engineering within an aerospace, defense, or similarly regulated environment Hands-on experience with electronic circuit design, component-level reverse engineering, and functional test development Familiarity with environmental qualification standards, e.g., UL, CSA, CE, RTCA DO-160 (Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment) Experience designing or specifying electrical test equipment or automated test systems Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail Ability to work effectively across internal teams and with external partners including DERs, test laboratories, and suppliers
Preferred Experience :
Experience with electrical or electro-mechanical part certification to FAA or DoD requirements, including familiarity with applicable approval processes and airworthiness or qualification standards Familiarity with applicable airworthiness standards (e.g., 14 CFR Parts 23, 25, 27, or 29) and their electrical systems requirements Experience working with FAA Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs) on engineering substantiation Background in avionics, aircraft electrical systems, or line-replaceable unit (LRU) design or repair Experience with EMI/EMC testing or electromagnetic compatibility analysis for airborne equipment Exposure to DO-254 (Design Assurance Guidance for Airborne Electronic Hardware) for complex electronic hardware Proficiency with EDA tools (e.g., Altium, OrCAD, or equivalent) and/or simulation environments
