Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented Electrical Engineer II (Relay) to support the design, implementation, and maintenance of substation protection and control systems. This position applies engineering principles to relay and metering design, power system protection, event analysis, communications, and regulatory compliance while supporting the safe and reliable operation of electric utility infrastructure. Candidates with experience in substations, transmission systems, electric utilities, or electric cooperatives are highly encouraged to apply. Recent engineering graduates with relevant coursework, internships, or project experience in substations, transformers, telecommunications, or power systems will also be considered. Key Responsibilities Design and develop substation relay and metering systems, including engineering drawings, specifications, and material lists. Perform relay settings calculations, coordination studies, fault analysis, and protective device evaluations. Prepare and review relay settings, one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and technical documentation. Support commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of protective relaying equipment. Analyze system disturbances and recommend corrective actions to improve system reliability. Coordinate with engineering, operations, contractors, and field personnel throughout project execution. Ensure compliance with NERC, IEEE, and other applicable utility standards. Provide technical support for system upgrades, protection and control projects, and capital improvement initiatives. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering preferred. Mechanical, Civil, or related engineering degrees will be considered if accompanied by relevant power systems experience. Engineering degrees must be from an ABET-accredited program . Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in protective relaying, substation engineering, power systems, or electric utility engineering preferred. Recent graduates with applicable coursework, senior design projects, co-op experience, or internships in substations, transformers, telecommunications, or power systems are encouraged to apply. Working knowledge of protective relays, relay coordination, fault analysis, SCADA, transmission and distribution systems, and power system protection principles. Experience with SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, or similar relay platforms is preferred. AutoCAD experience is highly preferred. A Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to obtain one is a plus, but not required. Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may be considered.
