Full Job Description SUMMARY:
The Electrical Engineer will own electrical design and application engineering across this platform. This person will work within the full product scope of the configurable BESS platform — translating a common certified core into repeatable, code-compliant, manufacturable product variants, and serving as the technical authority behind those variants for customers, utilities, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs). This role sits at the intersection of product development and revenue. This role requires working as closely with our sales and business development teams as with manufacturing. The designs will directly determine what we can sell, where we can deploy them, and how fast we can quote them.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and maintain single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, panel layouts, wiring and interconnect diagrams, cable and conduit schedules, and bills of materials. Perform load flow, short-circuit, arc flash, voltage drop, and protective device coordination studies; specify overcurrent protection, disconnects, switchgear, and transformers accordingly. Size and specify conductors, busbar, terminations, contactors, breakers, fusing, and DC isolation for each configuration's thermal and environmental envelope. Engineer the electrical interfaces between the BESS platform and Uptime's EV charging equipment, including DC-coupled and AC-coupled topologies, load management, and demand charge mitigation strategies. Adapt the core design across form factors, accounting for the distinct constraints of trailer-mounted and skid-mounted units (vibration, transport loads, roadworthiness, tie-down and grounding on relocation) versus containerized and permanently sited systems (HVAC integration, fire suppression interfaces, seismic and wind anchorage). Define control and communication architecture across the EMS, BMS, PCS/inverter, and site-level equipment, including protocol selection and mapping (Modbus TCP/RTU, CAN, DNP3, SunSpec, OCPP where charging is involved). Specify and validate operating modes — peak shaving, load shifting, demand response, islanding and backup, generator paralleling, and charger buffering — and the protection and transfer schemes each mode requires. Support integration and testing of instrumentation, metering, sensing, alarming, and emergency stop and shutdown circuits. Own design compliance to UL 9540 and

(including SA/SB where applicable), UL 2202/2594 for charging equipment, NFPA 855, NFPA 70 (NEC — notably Articles 625, 690, 705, 706, and 710), NFPA 70E, and
IEEE 1547 COMPETENCIES/REQUIRED SKILLS
5+ years of electrical design experience in power distribution, with direct hands-on experience in battery energy storage, power conversion, microgrids, or comparable medium- and low-voltage power systems. Demonstrated command of low-voltage AC and DC power distribution design: protection coordination, grounding and bonding, switchgear and panelboard specification, and conductor sizing. as applied to real deployed systems — not just familiarity, but experience getting designs approved. Proficiency in electrical CAD (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or SolidWorks Electrical) and power systems analysis software (SKM, ETAP, or EasyPower). Experience taking a design from concept through prototype, certification, production release, and field commissioning. Ability to communicate technical content clearly to non-technical audiences, including customers and internal commercial teams.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Direct experience with containerized, skid-mounted, or trailer-mounted power equipment and the transport, thermal, and environmental constraints unique to relocatable products. Experience with EV charging infrastructure — DC fast charging, load management, and utility interconnection for high-demand charging sites. Familiarity with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, BMS architecture, thermal runaway mitigation, and fire suppression system interfaces. Experience with utility interconnection processes, including Rule 21, IEEE 1547.1 testing, and interconnection agreements across multiple jurisdictions. Exposure to product certification workflows with UL, ETL, CSA, or equivalent NRTLs. Experience supporting a sales organization in a solutions or applications engineering capacity.
