Substation CAD Drafter Job Description This role focuses on providing high-quality CAD drafting support for electrical substation projects, creating and updating detailed drawings, and collaborating closely with engineering and project management teams. The position offers the opportunity to work with innovative modeling programs in Inventor for substation layouts and to learn directly from engineering leadership. Responsibilities Perform CAD drafting for electrical substation projects, ensuring accuracy and adherence to project requirements. Create new drawings and update existing drawings as required throughout the project lifecycle. Follow established CAD standards and procedures to maintain consistency and quality across all deliverables. Maintain accurate, detailed, and high-quality work products, including drawings, models, and documentation. Manage and prioritize work on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and schedule commitments. Seek resolutions to non-standard analytical drafting and design problems by working with engineers and project managers. Work closely and communicate effectively with project managers and engineers to understand design intent and project needs. Attend project-specific meetings to determine CAD schedules, deliverables, and technical requirements. Participate in site visits as required to gather field information and verify existing conditions for design and drafting purposes. Attend seminars and training classes to stay current with CAD tools, standards, and industry practices. Maintain a safe working environment by following safety procedures and supporting a culture of safety. Essential Skills Strong proficiency with Autodesk Inventor, with the ability to use Inventor effectively for drafting and modeling tasks. Demonstrated drafting experience using Inventor on projects involving power, substations, or similar sites. Proficient in AutoCAD for creating and modifying engineering drawings. Experience in substation design, including familiarity with layouts, equipment, and associated documentation. Experience in utility, power delivery, transmission and distribution, industrial power, or EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) projects. Experience with Revit or MicroStation for design and drafting on engineering projects. Associate Degree in Drafting or Engineering Technology, or equivalent technical education in a related field. Ability to follow CAD standards and drafting procedures with strong attention to detail and quality. Capability to work on multiple projects at the same time and manage competing priorities. Effective communication skills for collaborating with project managers, engineers, and other team members. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with substation design including transformer and power equipment layouts and associated drawings. Knowledge of power equipment and substation components used in transmission and distribution systems. Comfort working with new or specialized modeling programs within Inventor for substation layouts. Ability and willingness to attend seminars and training classes to enhance CAD and design skills. Experience working in environments focused on utility, power delivery, transmission and distribution, industrial power, or EPC projects. Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate drawing sets and project documentation. Problem-solving skills to address non-standard analytical drafting and design challenges. Adaptability to work closely with engineering leadership and incorporate technical feedback into drawings. Work Environment The role starts as an in-office position, with the expectation of working on-site up to five days per week initially to support collaboration and training. After this initial period, the position can transition to a hybrid schedule that combines in-office and remote work. The work environment is professional and engineering-focused, with regular interaction with project managers, engineers, and technical leadership. You will use tools such as Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, Revit, MicroStation, and other CAD software to produce substation and power-related drawings. The setting emphasizes safety, ongoing learning through seminars and training, and exposure to innovative modeling programs for substation layouts. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Atlanta, GA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $46000.00 - $65000.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
