We are a small company, which means this role is both hands-on and leadership-focused. The Engineering and Operations Manager keeps our product reliable, our production line running, and our customers supported. Some days that means reviewing a production schedule or negotiating with a supplier, and other days it means being at the bench diagnosing an instrument, revising a drawing, or working through a bug with our software developer. We're looking for a "player-coach": someone who can lead a small technical team and also do the work alongside them.
Responsibilities:
Engineering Own sustaining engineering for the InstaScope instrument line: investigate field failures, perform root cause analysis, and implement design changes to improve reliability, manufacturability, and cost Lead or contribute to new product development and product improvements across mechanical, optical, electronic, and embedded/software subsystems, working with internal staff and outside contractors Maintain engineering documentation, including drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), assembly and test procedures, and engineering change records Define and maintain instrument calibration, alignment, and test procedures, and make sure they produce consistent, traceable results Manage the relationship with contract software developers (iOS app and cloud platform): set priorities, review and approve requirements, and make sure fixes and features are tested and verified before release Evaluate new technologies, components, and vendors that could strengthen the product line Operations Oversee day-to-day production: scheduling, staffing, build capacity, and on-time delivery of instruments Manage purchasing, inventory, and supply chain, including vendor selection, lead time management, and handling component obsolescence and shortages Own quality: incoming inspection, in-process and final testing, nonconformance tracking, and corrective actions Oversee the return/repair (RMA) process and instrument service program, using field data to drive product and process improvements Develop and track operational metrics such as build yield, cost per unit, RMA rate, and support ticket trends Continuously improve processes, tooling, and work instructions to increase throughput and reduce errors Team Leadership & Customer Support Supervise, train, and mentor production and customer support technicians; set priorities and hold the team accountable to clear standards Serve as the escalation point for complex customer technical issues, distinguishing hardware, software, and user workflow problems Make sure recurring support issues are documented, prioritized, and fed back into engineering and software development Build and maintain an internal knowledge base and customer-facing documentation (user manual, setup guides, training content) Business & Strategy Work closely with the CEO and leadership team on product roadmap, budgeting, pricing inputs, and company planning Prepare and manage engineering and operations budgets, including labor and materials Support business development efforts with technical expertise, including customer meetings, partner programs, and demonstrations Ensure compliance with applicable safety, regulatory, and environmental requirements General Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations Other duties as prescribed
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, optical, or biomedical engineering, physics, or a closely related technical field 7+ years of engineering experience with electromechanical instruments or similar hardware products, including at least 3 years in a leadership, management, or technical lead role Demonstrated experience taking a hardware product through design changes and into production Hands-on experience with manufacturing operations, production planning, supply chain, and quality systems Proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks or similar) and the ability to create and review engineering drawings Experience working with software developers to define requirements and verify releases Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, on occasion Full time, 40+ hours/week; able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now and in the future No relocation offered. Must reside within 50 miles of the Gunbarrel, CO facility (Active Duty Military Service members exempt from this requirement)

Preferred:
Master's degree in engineering or an MBA Experience with optical systems, flow cytometry, particle detection, or analytical/scientific instrumentation Experience with connected devices (instrument + mobile app + cloud platform) Familiarity with the indoor air quality (IAQ), environmental testing, or remediation industries Experience with lean manufacturing, ISO 9001, or similar quality management systems Experience with embedded systems, electronics design, or PCB-level troubleshooting Startup or small-company experience
