Overview We are seeking an experienced Director of Systems Engineering to join our client's technology leadership team. This is a full-time, onsite leadership opportunity based in Worcester, Massachusetts . The ideal candidate is an experienced infrastructure leader with deep expertise in enterprise systems, cloud platforms, virtualization, storage, DevOps, and IT operations. This role combines strategic leadership with hands-on technical oversight, ensuring the reliability, security, and scalability of the university's critical infrastructure while leading a team of engineers and collaborating across multiple departments. You will play a key role in driving infrastructure modernization, improving operational efficiency through automation, supporting enterprise applications, and overseeing technologies that support both academic operations and campus safety. Key Responsibilities Lead and develop the Systems Engineering team while providing strategic direction and technical guidance. Oversee enterprise server infrastructure, storage platforms, virtualization, and cloud environments (AWS and Azure). Manage day-to-day systems operations, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability. Drive infrastructure automation and DevOps initiatives to improve operational efficiency. Lead the design, implementation, and lifecycle management of enterprise infrastructure solutions. Support enterprise applications through management of databases, middleware, web services, and load balancing. Oversee campus safety technologies, including physical access control, video surveillance, emergency communications, and related systems. Ensure infrastructure security, compliance, vulnerability remediation, backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity. Manage infrastructure budgets, vendor relationships, licensing, and technology lifecycle planning. Serve as the senior technical escalation point during major infrastructure incidents. Collaborate with IT leadership, academic departments, campus stakeholders, and external vendors to deliver reliable technology solutions. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent experience. Minimum of 7 years of experience in Systems Engineering, Infrastructure, or IT Operations. Previous experience leading infrastructure, systems, or operations teams.
Strong expertise with:
Windows Server and Linux administration Enterprise storage platforms Virtualization technologies AWS and Azure cloud platforms Enterprise backup and disaster recovery DevOps and infrastructure automation Database platforms, middleware, web services, and load balancing Strong understanding of enterprise security, compliance, business continuity, and disaster recovery best practices. Experience managing infrastructure budgets and vendor relationships. Excellent leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Preferred Qualifications Microsoft Windows Server certifications. Microsoft Azure or AWS certifications. Red Hat certifications (RHCSA or RHCE). Nutanix certifications. NetApp certifications. Rubrik certifications. Experience with enterprise monitoring, patch management, and IT service management platforms. Experience supporting higher education or large enterprise environments.
