Manchester, MainePOSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Substation Operations is responsible for leading and growing Atlantic Power Constructors's Substation project construction teams. This role requires an established leader with strong business development, client relationship management, and operational leadership skills, combined with a solid technical foundation and a proven track record of building and leading high-performing teams to deliver world-class services and outcomes. This individual will oversee project planning, estimating, execution, and operational performance while driving strategic growth and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Operations- Build, grow, and manage a high-performing team, serving as a leader, mentor, and coach in substation operations.
- Lead teams in the safe and successful completion of substation projects through all phases, including planning, estimating, and construction.
- Contribute to the leadership and management of project execution activities in support of clients' traditional power projects.
- Ensure projects meet health and safety standards, financial targets, project budgets and schedules, client expectations, and internal risk management and contractual requirements.
- Drive operational excellence through process improvement, performance metrics, and accountability across all projects and teams. Business Development & Revenue Growth
- Lead business development efforts for Substation Operations by identifying, pursuing, and securing new project opportunities with existing and prospective clients.
- Develop and execute strategic growth plans to expand APC's footprint in substation construction and related power sector markets.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with utilities, developers, EPC firms, municipalities, cooperatives, and other strategic partners to drive recurring business opportunities.
- Partner with estimating, operations, and executive leadership to develop competitive proposals, pricing strategies, and contract negotiations.
- Represent APC at industry events, conferences, and networking opportunities to strengthen brand awareness and uncover new opportunities.
- Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and emerging opportunities in substations and grid modernization to strategically position APC in the marketplace.
- Drive revenue growth and contribute to annual sales targets, backlog goals, and overall company profitability. Client Relations & Strategic Collaboration
- Support and execute APC's strategy of understanding clients' businesses and needs while delivering exceptional value and long-term solutions.
- Develop new client relationships and expand existing relationships by delivering strategic advisory services, excellent value, and quality service.
- Build APC's profile and strengthen relationships within key client organizations by sharing insights and maintaining strong sector knowledge.
- Collaborate with client account directors/managers, regional industry leaders, and service leaders to implement client- and market-specific programs.
- Provide enterprise-wide solutions for clients by understanding business risks, challenges, and opportunities. Innovation & Market Leadership
- Drive innovation within the sector to stay ahead of client needs and differentiate APC in the marketplace.
- Maintain a strong understanding of industry business cycles and prioritize sales efforts toward high-value opportunities.
- Stay informed on current and emerging industry regulations, technologies, and trends impacting substations and grid modernization. Additional Duties

SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Project Management, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 15+ years of progressive experience in a consulting environment or working substantially within the power sector.
- Significant experience in substation construction, transmission, and distribution markets in North America.
- Recognized technical expertise and an established reputation in the local marketplace within the power or capital projects/programs industry.
- In-depth understanding of the power industry and the companies operating within it, including existing relationships that can be leveraged into new business opportunities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the regulatory environment, utility/service commissions, and current and emerging industry issues.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to identify risks, solve challenges, and recognize opportunities to deliver client-focused solutions.
- Proven track record of delivering and managing multi-million-dollar sales and programs.
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position operates in a professional office environment with frequent travel to project sites, client locations, and other company offices as needed. Site visits may require work in outdoor environments and active construction areas with exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and uneven terrain.
