Job Description

About the Role At the Aztec Hotel, the building itself tells a story — one rooted in 1920s Mayan Revival architecture, restored with care and reimagined for modern hospitality. We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Chief Engineer to lead all engineering, maintenance, and facility operations, ensuring the hotel's physical assets, systems, and equipment are maintained to the highest standards. This role calls for a technically skilled leader who takes pride in both operational excellence and the rare privilege of preserving a nationally recognized landmark — delivering a safe, comfortable, and exceptional experience for guests and team members alike. Key Responsibilities Lead Engineering & Maintenance Operations Direct and oversee all engineering and maintenance operations throughout the hotel. Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs for guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house facilities. Ensure all building systems — including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fire safety, and life-safety equipment — operate efficiently and effectively. Conduct regular inspections of hotel facilities and grounds to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns, while preserving the property's historic architectural character. Develop & Lead the Team Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate maintenance team members. Respond promptly to maintenance requests, guest concerns, and emergency situations. Build a skilled, reliable team that reflects the hotel's commitment to craftsmanship and care. Manage Projects & Vendor Relationships Coordinate repairs, renovations, and capital improvement projects with outside vendors and contractors. Monitor energy consumption and implement cost-saving initiatives to improve operational efficiency. Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, equipment logs, and regulatory documentation. Ensure Compliance & Safety Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA, fire safety codes, and health and safety requirements. Maintain proper certifications and documentation for inspections, permits, and life-safety systems. Support Hotel Operations & Budget Collaborate with hotel leadership to support operational goals and enhance guest satisfaction. Prepare and manage departmental budgets, forecasts, and purchasing activities. Qualifications Minimum of 3-5 years of engineering or maintenance leadership experience in a hotel, resort, or commercial property environment. Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and general building maintenance systems. Experience with preventative maintenance planning and facility management. EPA Certification required; additional technical certifications (such as boiler operation, electrical licensure, refrigeration, or building automation systems) strongly preferred. Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate, train, and develop team members. Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to prioritize multiple projects and respond effectively in a fast-paced hospitality environment. Experience working within historic or architecturally significant properties is a plus. Availability for on-call emergency response outside of standard business hours.
