Job Description

Senior Engineering Mentor & FAA Certification Advisor Part-Time | Flexible Schedule |
Western Washington Compensation:
$70.00-$90.00 per hour, depending on relevant experience and qualifications
Schedule:
Approximately 8-20 hours per week, with substantial flexibility in setting your own schedule
Employment Type:
Part-time, hourly, nonexempt Help Build the Engineering Department You Would Have Wanted to Be Part Of We are seeking an accomplished senior engineer who has accumulated something that cannot be taught in school: experience, judgment, and the ability to move engineering work from an assigned problem to a completed result. . We have a small engineering team with capable engineers who need the benefit of an experienced technical mentor—someone who can help them develop the habits, judgment, organization, resourcefulness, and accountability required to independently progress complex engineering projects. We are particularly interested in candidates with substantial aviation engineering experience, especially FAA certification and approval processes and Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) projects . Your role will be to pass along what you have learned, develop our engineering staff, and help us build the engineering processes and accountability systems needed for a strong, self-sufficient engineering department. You will have considerable freedom in how you organize your time and accomplish that mission. What You Will Do You will work directly with engineering staff and company leadership to: Mentor engineers through active engineering projects rather than simply providing answers for them. Help engineers learn how to identify, locate, evaluate, and properly use the technical resources already available to them. Teach disciplined technical research, problem-solving, documentation, project organization, and follow-through. Help establish clear project objectives, intermediate milestones, deliverables, responsibilities, and completion criteria. Conduct regular project reviews and identify work that has stalled, lost direction, or requires additional resources or management attention. Help engineers distinguish between a genuine technical obstacle and a problem that can be resolved through further research, sound engineering judgment, or disciplined follow-through. Assist with development and improvement of engineering workflow, project tracking, design review, documentation, configuration control, and accountability processes. Review engineering work and provide technical guidance within your areas of experience. Help establish standards for complete, supportable, professional engineering work. Provide management with clear visibility into project status, obstacles, priorities, and resource requirements. Support FAA certification, approval, and compliance activities as applicable. Help develop the engineering organization so that projects continue progressing with progressively less day-to-day management intervention. This position is more about developing engineers and engineering discipline than it is about solving individual technical problems. Highest-Priority Experience The following experience is highly desirable and will receive priority consideration : Direct experience working with FAA certification, approval, or regulatory processes. Experience developing, supporting, reviewing, or managing Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) projects. Experience preparing or reviewing engineering substantiation and certification data. Experience developing compliance documentation, test plans, conformity documentation, certification plans, compliance checklists, or other technical material intended for FAA review or approval. Experience working directly with FAA personnel, DERs, DARs, ODAs, certification engineers, or other aviation regulatory representatives. Experience progressing aircraft modifications from initial concept through design, analysis, testing, documentation, compliance demonstration, and regulatory approval. Familiarity with FAA certification basis development, applicable regulations, policy, guidance, acceptable means of compliance, and technical documentation expectations. For this position, practical experience successfully navigating FAA processes and progressing STC or similar certification projects is among our highest-priority qualifications. Additional Qualifications Strong candidates will typically have: A bachelor's degree in mechanical, aerospace, electrical, manufacturing, or another relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent applicable technical experience. Significant professional engineering experience, preferably including senior, lead, chief, supervisory, project, or engineering-management responsibilities. Experience taking engineering projects from an initial problem or requirement through research, analysis, design, documentation, review, and completion. Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop less-experienced engineers or technical personnel. Strong technical research and problem-solving skills. Experience developing or working within effective engineering and configuration/document-control processes. Strong project organization and follow-through. The ability to hold people accountable while also teaching them how to become more capable and independent. The judgment to know when to provide an answer, when to point someone toward a resource, and when to require them to work the problem themselves. Clear written and verbal communication skills. Experience in aviation, aerospace, aircraft modification, mechanical systems, manufacturing, certification, testing, or other regulated engineering environments is strongly preferred. A Professional Engineer (PE) license is welcome but is not required. What This Position Is Not . We are not looking for someone to take over every engineering project or perform our engineers' work for them. The objective is to make the engineering team stronger, more resourceful, more disciplined, more accountable, and increasingly self-sufficient.
Success means:
Projects continue moving without constant management intervention. Engineers understand what they are responsible for and what constitutes completion. Available technical resources are thoroughly used before problems are escalated. Technical decisions and engineering conclusions are properly documented. Project obstacles are identified early rather than after work has stalled. Engineers develop the ability to independently research, evaluate, decide, document, and complete their assigned work. Management receives clear and reliable visibility into engineering project status. Why This Position Is Different We recognize that some of the most valuable engineering knowledge resides with experienced professionals who may no longer want a conventional 40-plus-hour workweek. This position is intentionally structured differently. You will have substantial flexibility to arrange your working hours around your life and other commitments. We are primarily interested in having the right person consistently engaged with the engineering team and accomplishing the mission—not in occupying a chair from 8:00 to 5:00. For an experienced engineer who enjoys solving problems, mentoring others, and passing along hard-earned knowledge, this is an opportunity to help develop the next generation of engineers while helping create the kind of engineering organization you would have wanted to be part of.
Compensation and Benefits Hourly wage:
$70.00-$90.00 per hour. Placement within the range will depend on relevant engineering, FAA certification, STC, leadership, mentoring, and industry experience.
Paid sick leave:
Provided in accordance with Washington State law.
Other benefits:
This part-time position is not currently eligible for employer-sponsored medical, dental, vision, retirement, vacation, or other full-time employee benefit programs.
