Position Overview:
The Foundry Product Engineering Manager at Vulcan Metals
•Tacoma, leads a multidisciplinary team optimizing product designs and foundry processes to improve product quality, reduce standard costs, and enhance customer satisfaction. This role oversees all technical aspects of foundry engineering from initial concept through to production for large, mission-critical steel castings. The position is accountable for developing and improving manufacturing methods, leveraging simulation and modeling tools, and ensuring alignment between product requirements and plant capabilities.
Primary Responsibilities:
Direct and oversee the design and development of gating, risering, and manufacturing methods to meet performance, cost, and quality requirements. Guide casting simulation efforts to validate and refine designs prior to production. Lead Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews with customers and internal teams. Ensure new and existing customer product lines are optimized for process efficiency and foundry capability. Coordinate technical communication with customers to resolve product issues and support continuous improvement initiatives. Drive efforts to modernize the use of CAD, solidification modeling, and digital tools in the engineering workflow. Team Management & Collaboration Manage and mentor a team of engineers and skilled tradespeople in the Pattern Shop. Establish goals, performance expectations, and development plans for all direct reports. Facilitate cross-functional collaboration with Machining, Quality, Scheduling, and Sales to support production readiness and customer satisfaction. Support training and knowledge transfer across the team to develop future engineering talent. Collaborate with finance and operations to support standard costing accuracy and cost reduction initiatives. Lead engineering contributions to new product introductions and pattern builds.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Material, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering (required). Minimum of 10 years' experience in foundry engineering or a closely related field, including leadership experience. Prior experience working in a heavy-industry or jobbing foundry environment preferred. Prior leadership experience required. Employment eligibility requires U.S. person status under ITAR regulations, including U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or other protected individuals due to export control requirements.
Experience:
Deep knowledge of foundry processes, casting simulation, and pattern equipment. Proficiency with 3D CAD and solidification modeling software (e.g., MAGMA). Understanding of metallurgy, casting design principles, and dimensional tolerancing. Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and process improvement techniques.
