Job Description

Job Overview The City of Newark is seeking a motivated, technically strong entry-level Environmental Engineer to support the development and implementation of water quality, source water protection, treatment optimization, and water system management initiatives within the Department of Water and Sewer Utilities. This is an early-career engineering position intended for an individual with a strong interest in water quality, environmental chemistry, drinking water systems, data analytics, and project implementation . The ideal candidate will have an environmental engineering background that is more closely aligned with water chemistry, treatment processes, hydrology, and environmental systems . Responsibilities
  • Support the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of projects
  • Process, organize, quality-check, and analyze water-quality, operational, laboratory, hydrologic, meteorological, and other environmental datasets
  • Develop calculations, graphs, dashboards, maps, technical summaries, and other analytical tools that translate environmental and operational data into clear, usable information.
  • Assist with the continued development and improvement of water-quality monitoring programs
  • Participate in routine and project-specific water-quality sampling and field investigations
  • Track project data, action items, technical questions, schedules, consultant or vendor deliverables, and other information needed to maintain progress on multiple concurrent initiatives.
  • Support regulatory compliance activities by compiling and reviewing monitoring data, maintaining organized records, evaluating reporting requirements, and assisting with preparation of reports
  • Work collaboratively with environmental scientists, engineers, treatment and reservoir operators, laboratory personnel, GIS staff, consultants, contractors, and other technical professionals to integrate field observations, scientific data, engineering considerations, and operational needs.
  • Assist with development and improvement of standard operating procedures, data-management systems, monitoring plans, project documentation, technical templates, and other tools that improve the consistency and efficiency of environmental and engineering programs.
  • Prepare clear written and visual technical materials, including reports, memoranda, presentations, figures, tables, and project summaries
  • Demonstrate initiative in assigned work by identifying missing information, investigating technical questions, recognizing inconsistencies or potential issues, and recommending logical next steps while working under the guidance of senior engineering and management staff.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The ideal candidate will be an analytical, organized, curious, and initiative-driven early-career environmental engineer with a strong interest in the chemistry and science underlying water-quality and the principles of water resource management.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Strong understanding of environmental chemistry, aquatic chemistry, water quality, and environmental engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to interpret laboratory data and understand analytical methods, detection limits, QA/QC considerations, and relationships among water-quality parameters.
  • Strong quantitative reasoning and the ability to identify patterns, inconsistencies, trends, and relationships within complex datasets.
  • Ability to organize large datasets and develop meaningful calculations, graphs, dashboards, maps, summaries, and technical interpretations.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis, GIS, databases
  • Ability to structure an open-ended technical problem by defining the objective, required data, methodology, milestones, deliverables, and next steps.
  • Strong project coordination and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple assignments and maintain follow-through on technical actions.
  • Ability to research unfamiliar technical subjects and synthesize scientific, engineering, regulatory, and operational information into a logical recommendation.
  • Familiarity with environmental and drinking-water regulations or the demonstrated ability to learn and apply regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to prepare concise, technically defensible reports, memoranda, presentations, procedures, and other documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with scientists, engineers, operators, consultants, contractors, regulators, and management.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate, organized technical records.
  • Intellectual curiosity and a demonstrated willingness to ask questions, investigate inconsistencies, and understand the engineering and scientific rationale behind project decisions.
  • Initiative and the ability to independently move assigned work forward while recognizing when technical or management guidance is required.
  • Ability to work in both office and field environments
  • Willingness to participate in water-quality sampling and field investigations

Experience Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university. Candidates with degrees in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering with a strong environmental/water-resources concentration, Water Resources Engineering, or another related engineering field may also be considered where coursework or experience demonstrates a strong foundation in water quality, chemistry, and environmental systems. Preference may be given to candidates with coursework, research, internships, or other experience involving: Environmental or aquatic chemistry Drinking-water treatment Water and wastewater engineering Hydrology or water resources Environmental microbiology Water-quality modeling GIS and spatial analysis Data science, programming, or environmental data analytics
Preferred Experience:
Relevant internship, academic research, laboratory, consulting, utility, or project experience may be considered in lieu of extensive full-time professional experience. Preference may be given to candidates with: 0-3 years of relevant experience in environmental engineering, drinking water, water quality, environmental chemistry, water resources, treatment, or a related field. Experience analyzing water-quality or environmental datasets. Experience conducting scientific or engineering studies and communicating the resulting findings. Experience with laboratory or field water-quality monitoring. Exposure to project coordination, pilot studies, research projects, engineering design projects, or multidisciplinary technical teams. Experience with Excel, GIS, statistical software, Python, R, Power BI, databases, or similar analytical tools. Experience working for or with a drinking-water utility, environmental agency, engineering consultant, research institution, or laboratory.
Licenses/Certifications:
Appointees will be required to possess a valid driver's license in New Jersey if vehicle operation is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Pay:
$18.00 - $28.85 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
