Contract Job Summary The NPI Engineer will own system design, assembly design, BOM readiness, engineering drawings, technical documentation, prototype/pilot builds, testing, and production launch activities . The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with commercial HVAC equipment, AHUs, sheet metal fabrication, 3D CAD, DFM/DFA, FMEA, and cross-functional product launch. Key Responsibilities Lead NPI activities for commercial and industrial Air Handling Unit (AHU) products from concept through production launch. Own system and assembly design, Buy/Make BOMs, engineering drawings, and technical documentation . Select and integrate components based on product specifications, regulatory requirements, cost, quality, and performance targets. Collaborate with Electrical, Thermal Design, CAE, Quality, Sourcing, Facilities, and Manufacturing teams during product development. Design and optimize sheet metal enclosures, structural frames, coil arrangements, fan assemblies, and related AHU components . Ensure designs minimize changes to existing manufacturing, sourcing, and value-chain processes. Coordinate prototype and production testing and serve as the engineering point of contact with external testing agencies. Lead phase-gate reviews, prototype builds, pilot runs, and launch-readiness activities . Validate manufacturing processes, cycle times, line balancing, and production capabilities. Work with suppliers and supply chain teams to evaluate capabilities for fans, coils, dampers, VFDs, controls, and other specialized HVAC components . Support supplier quality activities and PPAP requirements. Ensure AHU products meet applicable UL, ASHRAE, AHRI, OSHA, EPA, and DOE requirements. Apply DFM/DFA, FMEA, standard work, and Lean/Six Sigma principles to improve product quality and manufacturability. Maintain accurate engineering documentation and ensure documentation does not create production or launch delays. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering , or related field. 7-10+ years of NPI/product development experience with commercial HVAC equipment , preferably Air Handling Units. Strong hands-on experience with 3D CAD such as SolidWorks, Inventor, or Creo. Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication , including CNC punching, laser cutting, press brake forming, and structural welding. Strong understanding of AHU sub-assemblies, including: Coils DX systems Chilled-water loops EC/plug fans Filter racks Dampers VFDs HVAC controls Understanding of sensors and their appropriate application in HVAC systems. Familiarity with electrical panel wiring and low/high-voltage testing . Hands-on knowledge of DFM/DFA, FMEA, and standard work . Experience coordinating cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams. Strong communication, problem-solving, and project coordination skills. Preferred Qualifications Six Sigma Green Belt/Black Belt PMP certification Experience with HVAC regulatory and certification requirements. Experience with product launches, pilot builds, phase-gate processes, and production readiness. Experience working with HVAC suppliers and external testing/certification agencies.
