Job Summary The Chief Engineer is responsible for overseeing all engineering and maintenance operations of the hotel, ensuring that the building, guest rooms, public areas, equipment, and property systems are maintained in a safe, efficient, and reliable condition. The Chief Engineer will lead the engineering team, oversee preventive maintenance programs, respond to maintenance requests, coordinate outside contractors, manage engineering-related expenses, and ensure the property consistently meets brand, safety, and operational standards. Key Responsibilities Oversee the day-to-day operations of the hotel's Engineering and Maintenance Department. Lead, train, schedule, and supervise engineering and maintenance team members. Maintain the hotel's physical plant, including guest rooms, public areas, mechanical rooms, back-of-house areas, and exterior property. Develop and maintain an effective preventive maintenance program for hotel equipment and building systems. Troubleshoot and repair HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and general building systems. Inspect hotel facilities regularly and identify maintenance needs before they become major issues. Respond promptly to guest room and property maintenance requests. Work closely with Front Desk, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, and other departments to address maintenance concerns. Ensure guest complaints related to maintenance are handled promptly and professionally. Maintain and monitor boilers, water heaters, pumps, HVAC equipment, refrigeration, electrical systems, and other hotel equipment. Monitor and maintain fire and life-safety systems and ensure required inspections and testing are completed. Maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, service contracts, and equipment servicing. Coordinate with outside contractors and vendors for specialized repairs, inspections, and maintenance. Review contractor work to ensure services are completed properly and according to hotel standards. Manage engineering supplies, tools, parts, and equipment inventory. Assist the General Manager with engineering budgets, capital expenditures, and cost-control initiatives. Monitor energy and utility usage and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs. Assist with capital projects, renovations, equipment replacement, and property improvement projects. Ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations, building codes, fire regulations, and company policies. Maintain required permits, licenses, inspection records, and engineering documentation. Respond to emergency maintenance situations and participate in the hotel's emergency response procedures. Ensure the hotel's exterior areas, parking areas, and grounds are properly maintained. Maintain engineering work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition. Establish priorities for maintenance projects while minimizing disruption to hotel operations and guests. Communicate property conditions, maintenance needs, and significant issues to the General Manager. Ensure engineering employees follow proper safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment. Maintain a professional and service-oriented relationship with hotel guests and employees. Perform other duties as assigned by the General Manager. Qualifications Previous experience as a Chief Engineer, Engineering Manager, Maintenance Manager, or similar hotel engineering leadership position preferred. Previous hotel engineering or hospitality maintenance experience strongly preferred. Marriott/Sheraton experience is a plus. Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and general building systems. Experience managing preventive maintenance programs. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities. Ability to lead, train, and develop engineering team members. Strong communication and organizational skills. Ability to work independently and make sound decisions. Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and applicable building codes and regulations. Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and emergency situations when required. Valid driver's license preferred. Education & Experience High school diploma or GED required. Technical training in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems, or a related field preferred. At least 3-5 years of hotel engineering or maintenance experience preferred. Previous supervisory or management experience preferred. Relevant technical certifications are a plus. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, climb stairs and ladders, and work in mechanical areas. Ability to lift and move tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies. Ability to work in varying indoor and outdoor temperatures and conditions. Ability to respond to emergency maintenance situations. Ability to safely use hand and power tools.
