Plumbing DesignerPosition OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Plumbing Designer to develop efficient, code-compliant plumbing and fire protection systems for commercial, institutional, and municipal projects. The Plumbing Designer will produce detailed design drawings, perform hydraulic and stormwater calculations, size piping and equipment, and coordinate with engineers, architects, and municipal authorities to ensure designs meet AWWA/ASME/ASTM and NFPA standards. The role emphasizes accuracy in CAD deliverables, strong technical knowledge of plumbing and natural gas systems, and the ability to manage multiple projects to deliver reliable, sustainable solutions.
Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop detailed plumbing and fire protection/sprinkler system designs and construction drawings using CAD, ensuring compliance with NFPA 13 and applicable local codes and standards.
Perform hydraulic calculations, pipe sizing, pump and fixture load calculations, and stormwater drainage analyses to support design decisions and permit submissions.
Design municipal water distribution and sanitary systems in accordance with AWWA, ASME, and ASTM standards; prepare specifications and material schedules.
Design and detail natural gas piping systems, including sizing, layout, and regulatory compliance coordination.
Coordinate design intent with mechanical and electrical disciplines, architects, contractors, and municipal authorities; address review comments and revise designs as required.
Prepare permit-ready documentation, calculations, and drawings for municipal and authority approvals; respond to field inquiries and RFIs during construction.
Maintain and manage CAD drawing standards, templates, and libraries; produce accurate as-built and record drawings.
Support project estimating and scheduling by providing quantity take-offs, scope definitions, and technical clarifications.
Keep current with code updates, product innovations, and industry best practices; contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards.
QualificationsDiploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plumbing Design Technology, Architectural Engineering, or related discipline.5+ years of progressive experience in plumbing system design, including fire protection/sprinkler systems (NFPA 13) and pipe sizing for commercial or municipal projects.
Proven proficiency in CAD (AutoCAD or Revit preferred) and experience preparing construction documents and as-built drawings.
Strong working knowledge of
AWWA, ASME, ASTM
standards and applicable plumbing, mechanical and fire codes.
Experience with municipal water and sanitary systems, natural gas piping design, and stormwater calculations.
Demonstrated ability to perform hydraulic and fixture load calculations and prepare permit-ready calculation packages.
Excellent communication and coordination skills; experience working with multidisciplinary teams and municipal authorities.
Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently.
Certifications such as CPD (Continuing Professional Development) or related professional training are an asset but not required.
